draw straw pressure loss

I installed the draw straw today and I am get a 1 psi increase at idle but under load it will pull down the Fass 5-6 psi somthing that never happened before. I left the bottom screen on the sending unit as instructed,I am assuming that the pull of the fuel is pulling the screen onto the draw straw line even though I cut it at a very slight angle.
Anybody got any ideas??

so far not impressed

How slight an angle? It needs to be enough to let the pickup do its job. I have no issues with mine ... 18 @ idle and no less than 16 @ any time and that's with a Walbro.

My results were almost identical to Piperca's, but I did the big lines all the way to the VP at the same time. My fuel system has a Mallory regulator, 16 psi at idle no less than 14 psi at WOT. I removed the top puck screen and left the bottom one in place.

My only thought is that you have a restriction in your FASS filters or in the suction piping / hoses to the FASS. I am assuming you checked this all out pretty well before you posted, but if it were me I would look into that once again. Maybe you jacked up something during the installation and have missed it.

Other than that, try giving Vulcan (Eric) a call. He was very helpful to me when I did my install and had a few problems.

EDIT: Does'nt the FASS have a way to adjust pressure? I am not familiar with them.

Yeah, I cut the inside screen away and left the outside one. When I cut my pickup, I cut it square across then, using an Exacto knife, I cut scallops (2) around the mouth of the pickup, rather than cutting it at an angle. This way the pickup contacts the plastic housing of the screen/puck, but will not get plugged up. Each of the scallops was about 1/4" deep.

You can remove the screen/puck, but you'll have to fix the two halves of the module with screws, so you don't screw up the reading from your level sensor.

Think about the total surface area and directional turns you now present the housing vs a single 50 or 60 deg slash cut.

Just installed one on a buddy's truck (won't do that again) and he didn't noticed anything like that. It did cure his hard start problem so far.

I took the tank out again and increased the angle of the cut slightly it has helped, the truck will still pull down the psi to 16 from 21 with the comp on 5x5 and WOT, the only thing that just dawned on me is that I replaced the fass filter with a WIX 5 micron filter. Do you think this is the culprit simply trying to push the fuel through the filter?

We will see tommorrow if the hard start issues is fixed

the psi gauge still bumps around from 20-21.5 psi which it never did before.

I installed mine along with 1/2" lines to my Holley pump. I already had 1/2" lines from the pump to the VP. The only thing I noticed is that it maybe a wee bit harder to pull PSI down. Although I am running 150hp injectors and a comp, so the PSI is gonna drop. I'm seeing 15 at idel and 13 at WOT. I'm happy with Eric's big line kit and relocation. Also with the draw straw I don't have to worry about lines rusting on top of the tank.

PS I didn't reuse any of the filters/screens in the tank.

Did mine this weekend. Cut slight angle... left bottom screen! Have a 3 micron, Baldwin fuel filter and have never had pressure problems...even at 600+ hp!... so I would look elsewhere!

Took a while, but have picked up 1 psi, also. Still only get 1-1.5 psi drop at WOT! And as Big Blue said, I don't have lose of prime in am anymore...so far

Any of you that do the Draw Straw single handed have me very impressed. We had 2 strong backs plus myself and it was still no fun....and it took four hours.

Thats the thinking I had, do you think a small air leak could cause that much psi loss? Dieseldan had siad being the the 5 micron wix filter is paper I will see a loss

Ive been troubleshooting air leaks on my truck for awhile now. I have problems with losing prime a bit, but the most noticeable thing is the pressure drops from 30 to 15 or so at WOT.
I installed some clear plastic filters that are used on mercedes 380D diesels and I can see the air in the lines when I rev the motor. You might want to check for air also. The filters are cheap and you can find them on ebay.
