At the drag strip

I finally got my 3K GSK and #10 plate in, all I can say is wow!!!!!

Was going to take it down to the local strip, but I realised, this thing is still slow till 4th gear!

I have a 5speed, 2nd lasts about 2 seconds, then I have to shift, unfortunately, shifting this thing quickly only grinds gears, so it take 3 senconds to get into 3rd which I blow through quickly.

On the freeway, it's another story. I can terrorize unsuspecting ricers all day long and just watch their jaws drop.

How do you guys get a good launch and row through the gears without being left behind during shifts?

Teach me oh great ones.

At the dragstrip they start in 3rd. Just slip the clutch a little so you don't stall or roast the tires, then floor it. I haven't gotten up the guts to try it with my Getrag yet.

aaaah, well, I'll have to wait till I put the new clutch in then. 161,000 on the original, a trip to the strip would kill it for sure.

Wise decison. I finished of my clutch at the drag strip in NC two weeks ago. I'm at about 142000 and knew it was on the edge anyway and the run down the quarter finished it off. It never would hook up in third or fourth and I never even bothered going to fifth. Smoked and smelled really really bad for the next two hours. Fortunately there was enough left to get home and hopefuly enough to get to Forest City Diesel in March for a new one. Getting a new SB clutch, flywheel, TO bearing, slave cylinder and the whole works.
My sons truck is running 361 and 746 and has the double disc clutch already in it. I ran it down the strip and the tires chirped when I hit third. That truck is pretty awsome for something with 220000 miles on it.

I have heard (dont count on me) that if you just keep the throttle all the way down and then shift WITHOUT taking yoru foot off the throttle it wont hurt the clutch that bad. My dad did that with his Vette and when he was growing up and hardly anyone could beat him...course it was a small town that he grew up in plus it was about 25 or so yrs ago.

That would be called power shifting. And while it may be good for a vette, in my truck at least, it will cause serious grar clashing(grinding). I attribute this to the heavier rotaional mass inside the trans. Besides, I really don't want to chance tearing up a perfectly good trans for and extra second or so.

I just hate loosing because I have to shift so much off the line. 3rd gear trick may be what I'm looking for

Yep, the third gear launch is the key!!! I have it down to a science now. Great fun and much quicker. And it makes sense actually... The difference between second and third (in a 6 speed) is 3.38:1 vs 2.04:1 or about 40% higher ratio, or 40% less torque multiplication. BUT if you have bombed your CTD and are now making 800 Ft*lbs of torque, than you have 60% more engine torque than before and even when starting out in third, you still have 20% more wheel torque than a stock rig in second...

After I wrote all this I noticed that you have a 5 speed, so your 2nd to 3rd gap is a little bigger 3.04:1 to 1.67:1 or a 45% reduction in torque multiplication, but using the math above it still makes sense.

Be careful though... you will have to slip the clutch quite a bit and stock clucthes do not like heat at all..

Would it be better if I launched in 4 wheel drive? I guess I could pop it back into 2 wheel drive but I dont think it will disengage without letting off the throttle. So is it bad to let it goe 80+ mph in 4 wheel drive or will it disengage? I'm thinking that if I launch in 4 wheel drive I can hook up better.

4wd launches are the norm.

Broken parts are waiting just for you.

You won't hurt the Transfer case launching, or running 110MPH in 4wd, but your clutch, and gears might not like you much.

The Big Dodgs out there are all launching in 4wd running 13, 12 and 11 second 1/4 mile passes on a daily basis, and the only drivetrain parts they do break is in teh tranny.

Not even the DLD (Light duty t-case behind the automatics) isn't breaking down the 1/4 mile, or sled pulling.

Input and output shafts are the order of the day, especially with Automatics.

Even tho I have a stock shaft I still launch in 4wd but only at 7 or 8 psi. I know sooner or later it will give out but until then Im saving up.

If you have mild bombs I would suggest lanchin in 4wd. Last time I lauched in 2wd in 3rd I spun out big time and everyone laughed pretty hard. I wasn't because an s-10 just killed me. Spend the money, get the big shaft and clucth you can slip the crap out of and never worry about it anymore.
