Same here except with 285 Bridgestone Revo's. The Revo's are rated a little heavier than the stock 245 E's were. I haul 4500# flatbed with about 250# tongue weight. I don't notice any ill effects in handling loaded or unloaded.

mine are kelly safari's, d rated 119@3000 @65psi. haul my two kids around on the weekends with me and have a pretty good idea what I normally haul.....I could be hauling anything however, so today I had our tire manager order me some firestone transforce a/t's, e rated 3400lbs @$120 each. A very unexpected expense, but will feel much safer with my pride and joy in the passenger seat while I'm hauling scrap metal or whatever.

Exactly, I`ll add to my post above as well. If I make a too hard of a turn I can feel the front tire`s sidewalls rolling and I get a vibration from the heavy outer lugs on the Mud Terrains. Mind you I`m not talking about high speeds here, maybe 5-10 mph tops. When I first bought the truck I thought it was wheels bearings, worn front end parts etc but I also found the P.O. had the front psi around 35...WAAAY too low. Now at 50 psi it`s not as bad but it`s still unsettling. Heck it gives me a good ummmm"excuse" to go out and git me some 305/70 16`s anyhow

No towing at all. Popup camper on my back(#1800) 24/7 for 20,000 miles on this tire when it blew. Total truck weight with camper,cargo and wife and I= approx.8650lbs. I should have been running an "E". Unfortunately,until recently no E rated 285's existed and I needed the floatation for offroad. Just my opinion as I don't want anyone else to go through this. My experience was probably one in a hundred but that's one to many. BFG has one out @$206.00,about $20.00 more than the D. Toyo has another.

There HAD to be another reason this tire blew OTHER than the Load Rating.

You must have run over a foreign object that caused a catastrophic loss in air pressure which caused it to blow out.

I had a very similar experience with a blow out a couple years ago.

I was driving my 85 Riviera traveling on a (3) lane highway going around 70-75 MPH when I ran over "something". No idea what it was since I never saw it.

I was traveling in that fast lane passing a PACK of Semis that were in the right (2) lanes. I was right next to a Tanker Semi (in the Middle lane) when I ran over the object with the Riv's Right Front tire. The steering wheel started to shake and 2-3 seconds later the tire just EXPLODED!


Amazingly, I had "just" got past the front of the Tanker truck when the Riv took off VIOLENTLY to the RIGHT DIRECTLY in FRONT of the Tanker truck!!


I missed the Tanker's front bumper and the Riv then cut across the Slow lane right IN BETWEEN (2) other SEMIs!!

I ended up on the shoulder of the road UNSCATHIED! Thank God no of us ever made contact!

What is the Load Capacity (not the "D") stamped in the sidewall of the tire ?

FYI, the Capacity is listed in (lbs) near the Air Pressure (lbs).

got my firebricks put on at work today, e rated, 3415lbs@80psi, put 65 psi in them for now until I have to load her up. test drove it around the block and could feel a definite difference between the tires. felt a lot better. Now time to go pay for them.......

all tires are not created equally...so all D range tires and even E range tires are not either.

if you get a larger size D rated tire with a load range of over 3000lbs each.....you should be fine for towing anything up to 10,000 pounds. Like others have said...some D tires will flex and feel squishy...but my Nitto Terra Grapplers (295x70x17) feel solid with 60front and 65rear. Tire place put them on as 65 front and 70 rear but I dropped it five pounds...they were going by door sticker for max load.

So the bottom line is there are some great D tires out there especially if you wont tow more than 10,000 pounds...but you got to look and read their load ratings and such. Right now not much choice for our 17inch tires...but hopefully by time I need another set the choices will be larger.

Question What is the "Correct" Tire Air Pressure ???

I know the placards placed on the driver's side door jam calls for "Recommended" air pressure from a vehicle's manufacture.

As you know, tire manufacturers offer a Maximum air pressure rating based on a given tire's Load.

I need to know if there is in fact a SAFE RANGE for air pressure for tires.

For instance. On a 98 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, the truck manufacturer's label states that the OEM "E" Load 245/75-16 tires be set at "Recommended" 33lbs.

Tire manufacturer's give the Maximum Rating for E Load 245/75-16 tires of 80psi (Firestone Transforce A/Ts).

So is there a "SAFE" Air pressure RANGE of 33 - 80 psi ??

I run 315/75R16 Pro Comp MTs, Load Range Ds

They do wear funny but, mud tires never seem to wear well

I run like 50 lbs in the front and 45 in the back.

No problems here.

After my Bridgestone experience I did replace them with BFG KO's which was the strongest tire on the market in 285 size at that time. Incidentally,Bridgestone issued a recall on my series of tires but unfortunately I chucked my receipt . Tread sepation had been a chronic problem. The place I had purchased them from had gone out of business,so no record of purchase. Anyway,all they'd do was install more Bridgestone's. I must admit that the Bridgestones rode very well and balanced superbly with little weight. In contrast,one of my BFG's takes 8-9oz.s to balance each time even with road force. Discount says its "normal". I e-mailed the headquarters about needing the excessive weight to balance which produced no response. The three-ply sidewall does give me some piece of mind though. Occasionally I unload the camper and the "D's" feel much better. I can't help but feel that with 8650lbs. 24/7 an "E" is the answer for my situation. But of course that equates to another contribution to the money pit.

I just noticed that the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO is Rated #12 out of 19 tires listed.

Just a Note when comparing tires here.... Keep in mind what TYPE of tire you are comparing. (ie All Terrians -Vs- Mudders etc...) BIG differences in mileage, wear and performance!!
