Question Does your truck have Load Range "D" tires ??

If so, what size are they and how do they ride/handle ??

Also, how fast is the tread wearing ??

The reason I ask this is this... Some local tire dealers are saying that our big Rams with the Cummins engines require Load Range E tires and anything less (Load Range D) will result in poor handling and very poor tread life.

What is your experience ??

I'm running 315/75/16 load range d nittos and they ride better than any load range e tire I've ever been in. I've gotten 40k miles out of them. The load range d's will usually ride better because they have less plies and require less air pressure. As far as handling, I'll pitch my lifted truck around a corner at 30 and never think twice. My folks have been running load range d's and pulling 10k pound trailers for YEARS and have never had an issue.

I had "D"s on my dually...once,
On the rear, not too much difference in wear, but the did feel a little squirrely due to sidewall flex.
On the front.......even when inflated 5 pounds over the maximum rating, they wore on the outside edges like they were underinflated due to the weaker sidewalls inability to support the weight of the massive Cummins, and the flex causing the tread to 'roll-over' on turns .

No. I am running Goodyear SilentArmor. See below. I ran a set of load range D tires for about two weeks. They felt really squashy and I learned that there could be a legal issue as well. If you run load range D tires and they fail and you cause damage or kill someone then you could be held legally liable for running the lower tires. I wouldn't tow with the D tires at all...

Good luck.

I have a set of used D & E LT 265 75 R16 I am going to put on ebay really soon. pm me if you want details.

A larger "D" tire will have a capacity closer to the stock "E" tire. Within a couple hundred pounds or less.
Thats the key to the equation.

I tried a D tire same size as stock and let me tell you it was not up to snuff, especially on corners ands with load.

I have 285's on and they are D's (3305lbs each), but the capacity is near an E stock tire.

You do want the capacity of the stock tire, whatever that translates to in pounds.
Use that as your guide for choosing a larger D tire.

I have 285/75/17 BFG AT KO's in load range D, I dont tow, but otherwise they seem fine so far, second set I have had on two trucks, if you want more aggressive tread not much avail in load range E. I look at the weight rating, on the BFG's its very close to stock Michelins

Nothing wrong with good quality "D" tires in 285's and up... as mentioned above.... as long as your not towing heavy. JMO
I got 65,000 miles out of Michelin 285/75/16's and they are still going on another truck that drives local only. Did lots of hauling at 9,000 lb +/-with no problems due to 65 psi pressure max.
My new 315's look great... but don't handle as well on the stock, 8" wheels.

I run BFG 285/75/16's and don't have any problems from a handling or load standpoint. But I have cracking in the tires and BFG will not warranty them because the truck calls for E range and mine are D.

My truck has load range D tires and if i'm not mistaken the load rating per tire is relatively close to an E load range tire.

The Nittos ride very nicely, and with correct air pressure wear really good, mine have over 25K and are still around 50%.

Handling is awesome, have no problem at all throwing the truck into curves, every now and then when I practice being a rally driver in a 7700 LB truck.

Someone gave me a set of good used D range 265 tires when I bought my truck, so I mounted them up until I had money for new tires. I will NEVER go back to D rated tires on this truck! With our twisty roads, they handled very poorly due to sidewall flex. I even tried them inflated a bit over max. pressure with no luck. Once I got new E rated 235/85 (same overall height as the 265/75 tires), the truck handled MUCH better. It doesn't absorb very small bumps as well as the D tires, but I'm happy to give that up for the improvement in handling. And for a fair comparison, these happen to be the same brand and design tires, just different sizes.

I bought mine a few weeks ago and looked at the tires and found that they were load range D's at 3000lbs each and thought that is a heavy duty tire. Now.....you guys are saying......run forest....run!!! I have been looking at my front tires and they seem kind of...well looks like they are low on pressure but they are not, checked them twice in two weeks....that's better than what I do on my other vehicles. So that could be the sidewall not thick enough? And it does feel like the outer edge is worn....these tires are brand new or real darn close to new, but I plan on towing, not insane loads, scrap metal, hay, feed and such..need new tires??? E rated??? Wife's gonna kill me!!!

Anyone in the market for some really nice Kelly safari radials....almost new???

I have 255/85 16 bfg muds load range D, they have about 10k or so on them and when they are shot...wich won`t be long I`ll be going to an E tire. At this rate I expect I`ll get maybe MAYBE 20k out of them. I have to run the fronts at max psi and the sidewalls still bulge too much for my liking. just my .02

Not necessarily.

After much research, I'm finding that it all comes down to the actual LOAD Rating of the tires. The designations of C, D, E are Load RANGES!

Looks like folks are having the most sucess with the higher Load RATED D RANGE and Load RANGE E tires. I would probably stay with a Load Rating of >119 (which is in the D RANGE).

D RANGE ends at 122 and E RANGE starts at 123. I'll post a Chart I found on here shortly.

If you plan on an serious towing, I would most certainly go with Load RANGE E myself.

Yes...

285/75/16, soft ride, at 55 PSI on rear, 60 PSI on front tires. I tow heavily occasionally and they work well. I have had no issues with load range D's on my truck whatsoever... Liberators from wally world to be exact, that is what they are, and i paid 425 for them out the door...
