Dodge Cummins exhaust brake
I'm having trouble with my exhaust brake and was wondering if anyone knew of a site that will give me some tips on troubleshooting my problem..
I've checked my switches ( dash and fuel ) my relay and all seem to be ok.. I think it could be the valve that opens the vacumn line and I need a schematic on this setup and what to do to check it..
Thanks...
oh.. the truck is a 97 3500 dually 4X4 with 280,000 and its been a great unit..

A fairly common problem with vacuum actuated e-brakes is the "spool valve" that can get gummed up over time. Simple disassembly, cleaning and lubing are all that's required much of the time.
What brand and model brake is it?
Did you try that company's web site for the schematic of the valve?

Thanks for the feedback and as for the type of brake...its the one that was sold by the Dodge dealership as original equipment back in '97. Where would this info be written on the unit..? Its got a vacumn canister that activates a plate in the exhaust at the rear of the exhaust manifold and this can be moved back and forth easily by hand so its not stuck.

Regardless for the brand of exhaust brake Pac or BD the vacuum solenoid has two screws holding the coil on, remove the coil, you will find a white oval spacer, inside the body you will find a control valve that looks like a cam, remove the C/V and clean it in mineral spirits, or your wife’s nail polish remover, clean the inside of the solenoid body and reassemble. The most common problem with vac operated brakes is the solenoid needs cleaning. If you need further help drop me a line

I'm still needing help here..my exhaust brake is Ram- Brake by Jacobs and it doesn't have a spool valve like anything shown on the attached sites. It has an electric solenoid which I took apart and cleaned.. this part works when power is fed to it from an external source but the control valve also has another switch screwed on the vacumn/exhaust side of control valve. It has 2 wires coming from it and and they are plugged into a separate harness and I can't get do anything. I have a relay and perhaps this is my problem.. How does one check them..? I have power there and when I apply power to one of the terminals..the control valve opens and my brake comes on...all switches are working so is this relay perhaps faulty..?

I have the same unit. Jacobs is owned and sold by Cummins. Is there a Cummins/Onan dealer near you? They might be able to provide a schematic. My truck is parked in VA right now and I am in TX but will be back there this weekend. I think all my installation paperwork is in my toolbox. If you haven't tracked down the problem by Sunday PM me. In the meantime confirm that the micro-switch that is mounted on the engine gear case and is open/closed by the throttle linkage is working and in adjustment. After 500k miles, that is the only part that has failed on mine.
