Diesel rookie has questions

Since I joined this board I've been reading all the stuff that you can do on the CTD, but having very little knowledge on diesels(read as "dont know a thing"), I have some questions.....

1. Are there any magazines for diesels? Like Hot Rod, or Car Craft.

2. Anyone have instructions on how to make your own BHAF? And are they better then a AFE, or a Scotty?

3. How loud are stacks inside the cab? Was like to do them, but the wife said they would probably be too loud, especially on long trips. (Haul a race car trailer, so we travel to tracks.) Also, who makes the kits for stacks?

4. What is the "J" hook for the wastegate for that they sell aftermarket? Does it help, or just a waste of money?

5. How long will the stock injector pump hold out?

6. With an exhaust, and an intake, and stock everything else, how much smoke will it blow?

I appolagize for my ignorance, but I see what some of your guys trucks look and sound like, and I want to join that crowd!

Anyone else in northern Illinois?

1-None I know of...all you need is right here on DTR!
2-Never heard of anyone doing it....Go with a Scotty II, but do gauges first...to get a stock base line reading.
3-Loud! With serious drone.
4-J-Hook closes down wastegate for more boost. Will throw a computer code unless you have a boost fooler. Don't buy J-Hook by itself.
5- 02 Injectors Pump are pretty strong. Don't worry about it.
6- No more than now

Take TV time and read EVERY thread on here that might interest you.....it's free and you'll be suprised how quickly you pick stuff up. It's a great way to absorb knowledge.

Many in Illinois....read the threads & check for addresses.

ive jsut installed sacks on my dodge. i always run with the windows down because i love the sound of the straight 5'' CTD!! but in the few days it has rained here, i had to drive it with the windows up. and the stacks aint that much louder than straights out the back. (with the radio on) i love em and ill never go back, and i dont think that you could possibly make a diesel too loud, but it just depends on your taste. like all the other guys say on here, if you think it will be to loud, it will be.

oh by the way, i had 108,000 miles on my stock injector pump. i dont know if i was lucky or what. people on here have had them go out at under 40,000 miles. ive never herd of the 02 ip's being better, but what do i know. Its just a coin toss on what your going to get. jsut get your guages in and see what your fuel pressure guage is reading. that could be the cheapest thing that you ever do to it, if you do catch a bad lift pump.

O.K, first, thanks for the replys, and the info. Now, on gauges, which ones look, and work the best? I know Auto Meter work rel well(have them in the race car), but do they clash real bad with the interior? Also, other then Summit, where is a good place to buy gauges? Summit has a 3 pod with Auto Meters for $300.00. Good price?

i bought my autometer pyro and boost and my 2 pod off of ebay. I will soon get my fuel pressure autometer off of ebay too. They have different styles of guages so you can pick one that will work good with your interior.

If you want to match the interior go with Isspro.

I have repainted the gauge pod since this was taken.

Yup - ISSPROS match perfectly with the 02 Dash...but don't forget the green bulb covers to make it a perfect match!
