Death Code & Smarty ?

Death Code & Smarty ?
I have been getting the death code occasionally, when I go to stock setting
seems to be ok, Loaded Smarty' fuel saver', Death code and Dead pedal....
first time I got on it hard...
Back to stock, few miles ok, Now, I assume my VP is , well, near death.
Question/comments on Smarty and increased timing accelerating the
Death of a VP44, or just exposing the weakness...
My thoughts , If dead pedal, than timing stuck retarded,,,"no Power" ?
Smarty adds timing fast ( sensitive throttle ) so Smarty retards timing
fast, Result: stuck timing piston in retard position...
Please, not an expert, not even a novice. just trying to understand
Interesting also, added some 2 cycle oil a 150 miles ago. ? would
that free up junk in VP44?
I know I got to replace the pump, but want to make sure next one lasts...

New VP time?
Smarty fuels much more aggressively and down lower. It's probably just a coincidence about the death code. Probably time for another VP 44 and a Vulcan or Glacier lift pump setup to protect your investment. Also a pressure gauge too.

got the gage 20k miles ago, plus campain lp and relocate with big lines and drilled banjos, always 13 psi/ min 10 psi under heavy load , with slight dip to 9 for a occasionaly
I was at a Bosch rebuilder, showed me a piston ( i think it was the advance )
" Black " looked like the color of a dirty filter, came from a brass insert pump.
I wonder how good the OEM filter is, my guess, Junk....

How does your truck run with out the smarty in? I get a 0602 code, its normal. I would check fuel pressure and change fuel filter. Is the 0216 the TPS sensor? You could have issue there. Too many times we blame the VP44 for anything. I've replaced a few for no real reward afterwards. I've only killed two to the death. I had one that would work and not work. That the electronic stuff going bad. One VP just got weak and stop making power. It still worked.

P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure. High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.
0122, 0123, 0124 are the APPS codes.
here is a link to a list of codes for the 24v.

it's the Po216 , fuel filter just changed a few hundred miles ago...
fuel pressure good ( no change ),
What is interesting is the effect Smarty has on the code,
Like a Death code switch....
Thanks bob4x4, that was my feeling, 02 pumps no good...
Do you know when they changed to brass sleeve, Are all HO pumps brass sleeves ?

If your buy a VP, buy the SO 27 pump. Your truck will pull harder at higher rpm. If I remember correctly the 28 is the HO pump. Whats you fuel pressure at idle and wot? The 28 pump will give you more bottom end than the 27 but doesn't make the bigger HP numbers like a SO. Some think you explore if youre building a high HP rig. Sorry to hear about your pump, its a simple install that you can do in a evening. Just watch your keyway on the pump and gear. Its a pain to line up but thats the worst part. Your injector lines will come out in two clumps. The front and back lines. Take a piture of where the line supports are. I've even marked the lines to the cylinder but they only go in one way unless you start bending.

thanks mike,,,, think i'll stick to the ho pump,
no plans to pull or race, but like lot's of low end torque...
love the smarty, but gotta fix the pump.....
Easy job? not at my age and with old timers remember, if I had a big garage maybe, think i'll just pay the big bucks...
