Backing a trailer in 4 L in a 2nd gen with the front end locked in, is abusive to the drivetrain on firm ground.
I don't like to do it.
I do that with my 1st gens as I can not lock the hubs and still use 4 L.

Or if you have the CAD front axle then you can install a 2 lo kit. Which is not only much less abusive to the drivetrain but its also safer and easier.

I have had a few Posi lock pull cable CAD units on 2nd gen trucks, which allows using 4L without the front axle engaged.
Those work great, but just using a stock front axle in 4L to back a truck on hard ground because you have a grabby clutch, is not a good option IMHO.

Most of the time I don't need 4lo but the few times that I have I just used it to get the load moving then shift on the fly or I don't make any turns and back straight up. Thanks for the concerns.
