cutting stacks
Has anyone tried cutting chrome stacks? Can it be done without chipping and discoloring the tips? Reason I ask is because I found a set of 6" turn outs x 60" reduced to 5" OD for $145 or the same ones 40" for $75. I prefer the look of the miter cuts myself and was hoping to get these and miter the tops. Anyone done this with good results?

I cut my 48 inchers down, but I cut the bottom not the top. I used a cut-off wheel in an air die grinder. It did not damage the chrome, but you would need a very steady hand to make a mitre cut with a die grinder.

I don't intend to use a die grinder. If the local exhaust shop won't sut them with the miter saw I will take it to Machine Services and have them do it with the water jet.

i would think the waterjet would peel the chrome off...... i'd just tape them the way you want it and use an ancle grinder with a cutoff wheel.... take it slow and steady..... once you drive them 10-20 miles depending on your fueling situation you won't be able to notice that they've been cut....

I just put my 5" stack on last monday and we just used a chop saw to cut the turnout to a miter. Didnt chip the chrome just deburr it good, then mask off all but about 1/4" of the top of the miter cut then use some good temp. silver paint, you wont never notice cause the first 1/2 inch of the stack will be covered with soot anyways.
Oh and I used a $15 stack take off from a local truck chrome shop as my stack, the way I see it is with such a small investment on the main stack you can always cut it off and add new(used) big rig take offs again.

If you have a local Machine shop ask them to cut them in a low speed band saw. I cut them all the time with no trouble. We also have a FLOW dynamic waterjet and a waterjet is about the last machine you would want to use.
Good luck,

Well I the ones I would up getting are 60" straight. I think I am going to cut them about 4-6 inches above the cab and use flappers for the rest of the year and until spring. If I decide I don't like the flappers I will miter them in the spring.
