Is a custom aftermarket turbo really worth it?

I was trying to gather enough money together to purchase an used Phat Shaft 62/14 but my A/C took a dump and hogged my turbo money. Likely, this used turbo will be gone long before I have the cash again.

But, I wonder if I really needed it in the first place. I have an Edge HOT juice. Lately I am thinking an used HX 35 would be just fine. I have EGT issues currently with my HY but am not running a J hook. I am thinking the smaller 12cm housing on the HX, vs. the 14cm PS, would be better and along with a boost elbow I should be fine on EGT's drag racing and mainly towing.

My questions are...
1. I know the HTT and II turbos are nice, but do they really make THAT much of a difference on a mere 350HP truck over a 30PSI HX?

2. What level of EGT drop should I see going from a stock 22psi HY to a 30ish PSI HX? How much SOP difference should I see between the two turbos?

3. Whats a decent HX with no shaft play go for and are they easy to find?

its not so much a sop performance, but it keeps it a lot cooler so you can stay in it longer. with just the juice, it may not be as crucial, but still, i think its well worth it.

oh and i dont need my hx anymore

there was a hx-35 on ebay with a bid of $28 today. Might check and see if it is still there. Didn't actually look at the auction so I don't know what condition it is in though.

Agreed..turbos don't make power. They just supply more air to more fuel to keep it cool. The fuel delivers power. You could have 100 psi and not get a real SOP gain.

Of course, but when you are severely overfueled like I am, more air that would equal out the mixture better, that is still cool air, should net more power. I blow black smoke all the way down the track.

Smoke

out the tailpipe is wasted power, the larger turbos help burn that fuel and use that power you are losing out the tailpipe, and they keep things cooler...

I went straight from an HY35 to a KSB-1 when I had my comp and 275's. I could have gotten away with an HX for much cheaper but I still mighta had a slight EGT issue. Not to mention that when I went bigger I would have had to spend more money to get an even bigger turbo. The biggest difference I noticed was the mid-top end pull I gained. I used to struggle to get to 107mph with the HY and the comp on 5x5. When I swapped to the KSB-1 I could sail up to my RPM limited 117mph. A bigger turbo is most definately worth it.
