Cross box or tube????

Im going to be puttin miter cut stacks on my dodge and was wondering which would be the best way to go about plumbing in the bed. I was going to do the cross box design in the bed but just recently heard it and it sounds really raspy. Is that because of the box? or should i just use 4in pipe?

I temporarily have the crossbox setup...not raspy at all in mine, but I ran 5" from about the trans crossmember back. When I am towing heavy, they growl pretty good, especially with the windows down, and the resonance would probably annoy most. I mostly drive empty, and there's no noise problem at all, and I don't employ muffs either. I'll be switching to tight radius 90's in a few months hoping for a smoother flow. I do however, still have the stock downpipe.....don't know if this changes things or not, but I would think the smaller the pipe, the raspier it would be. When I had straight 3" to the bumper....THAT was really raspy....sounded like poop actually.

I've have the crossbox setup on my F*rd, it has a distinct sound to it. Of course thats without a turbo, but it does sound a bit raspy and has a slight high pitch drone to it for some reason.
I just started on my new setup for my CTD, used 5" pipe and some 90's for the crossover, so I'll keep you posted on how that sounds. It's definately easier to build, a lot less welding. I did have the problem of a frame crossmember being right underneath the end of the bed so I had to go back and up and then back forward into the crosstube, anyone with 1st gen's done this? I was afraid to cut the crossmemeber I'll post pics when I'm done and give an update on the sound. I'm using a muffler for a change, so I'm anxious to see what the difference is.

Oh, another tip, if you go on a long trip and have the sliding window in the back, keep it closed, I made the mistake of not one time and drove from columbus to St louis. The entire right side of my face was black by the time I got there. Not to mention the interior of the truck. Oops.

Well I got mine done today, sounds awesome. The muffler didn't quiet it down too much but smoothed out the exhaust note. As for the Crosstubes, I definately like it better than the box. Sounds better, no droning, it's silent except for the exhaust note. And it looks awesome too. The only difficult thing was trying to get it to stay truly verticle.

No pictures yet, too dark out already.
