Very true. We have several Duramax's at work with the "Allison" transmission and they are unimpressive to say the least.
People think heavy truck trans when they see Allison, but the trans they are putting in these trucks are an Allison by name only IMO.

the alli is a complex computer tranny....ud need extensive comp work to get the engine and alli to work together consider that expensive....then throw in lots of hardware...umm lets see...everythign from the flywheel on over to allow the tranny to bolt up right....different tranny mounts....different transfer case..perhaps driveshaft changes....gonna cost u a few grand...u can get a hopped up 48RH that will take alot more than any allison can
whats the big thing with going with the 1000 series allison?? its the base model it maxes out at 590 torque (website) and replacement parts or beefier parts cost u more than some used trucks!
heck id love to go 5 speed so if ur gonna do this then please let me know and i'll drive down and pick up the tranny thats lying on ur driveway

ATS has a stand-alone controller for the allison transmissions now. You can find a used allison out of a wrecked dmax and there is a bellhousing to mate the two. Overall a little more money for a build up allison and the controller then to just build a 47RE. One of our project trucks is probably going to do the swap to the allison pretty soon.

If you want the Allison don't get the 1000 they have on Duramax, get a 2000 or 2400 they will stand a lot more power and torque.
They make adapter plates for them very easily, since Cummins installs their motors (ISBs) on many commercial trucks.
Installation on your motor is not a problem, they also come with it's own TCM so they are independent. Only place you will have to look is adapter for rear output, since commercial trucks are all 2WD.
I know all this since I just sold a complete setup 2004 ISB Cummins 215 with Allison 2400
My suggestion, get a nicely built Goerend or Suncoast transmission.....
