Cost difference of swapping in a stick vs. building my auto

After driving my roommates 6 spd several times the urge to put a stick in my truck is starting to get pretty big. I love driving a stick. Alway have and always will. I know they aren't the best for drag racing but oh well. Since the day I bought my truck I wish it would have had a stick in it. My question is this, assuming I pull either a 5 or a 6 spd out of a wrecked truck, what would be cheaper to build and hold 600-700hp, the stick or the auto? I know the auto's gonna run me about $6200 when I'm all said and done but I have no clue about the stick. I can do a lot of the work myself as long as it doesn't involve any welding (I have very limited access to a welder). I know I'll need the tranny, clutch system, ECM, clutch (which will probably be a SBD DD), drive shaft maybe, transfer case maybe. What else? Which tranny would yall suggest? I plan on doing some racing and I've driven both the 5 and 6 spd and I still don't know which one I want more. I'm very serious about this because I'm saving up for a built auto but I want to make sure I do this once and I get what I like. That way I'm not saying "I wish my truck was a stick" for the rest of my life. Thanks for the help yall.

I think unless you can do ALL of this yourself, it will cost big bucks and give you major headaches...save yourself some grief and stick with a built auto. I think a 600 hp Goerend Tranny is around $4k. 600 hp is plenty.

Add the billet shafts on the goerend and the price is up to almost $6000.

Bigblue..

I know u love ur cummins ALOT.. as do I, but seriously, wouldnt it be much easier to remove as many bombs as you can, and just sell the truck for a really good price, and put down the money towards one similar that can take ur bombs and be a six or five speed? Six speed is a closer ratio, but i like the five speed more for racing, and the six speed more for towing, IE no fifth gear nut issues...

I agree with Dr evil here, your best bet is just get the built auto, and save up ur money for a 24 valve manual and enjoy it later, u can have one of each!

http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...88-03_auto.htm

i found this a while ago when i wanted to switch to a manual but later on i found that theyre just not all worth it........found a guy who is in texas that told me he would build me a racing tranny with all the bells and wistles for around 3 g's.....and he said he would warranty it for a lifetime....

I'm with Tx,

For as much work as it would be to swap trannies, it would probably be less work to pull all your stuff off your truck and swap it onto another truck.

Just my opinion

if anyone follows the Cummins Racing Team.......they had a 47re tranny built and tested on a machine with 8,000+ tq and it shifted with such ease......... mike quote once that 47re trannys are bullitproof if you build them right.........

plus towing and racing are easyer with an Auto.....i know its cool dropping it in 6th and riding getting extrea 2 MPG but the time it takes to shift harsh on 6th speed.......they are so close together you have to pray u make it into the right gear.........

I also actually like the 5 speed better, smoother, easier shifting tranny. But the 6 speed is heavier duty.

But you could put the 1 3/8" shaft in the 5 speed, with the 6 sp flywheel and 13" clutch.

So, I would say the 5 speed if your building.

I build tranny's also but I don't unerstand how someone can build a tranny for 3 G's??
The parts cost me that much with billet shafts?? And a lifetime warranty?
I'm confused?

Not at all. The 6-speed has great ratios, PERFECTLY matched with 3.54 axle and 265 tires if you tow. If not, taller tires will give you a little taller gearing. IMO, 4.10 axle is never needed with a 5600. I just can't imagine needing lower gearing with the Cummins grunt in 1st gear of a 5600.

Most 5600 owners like me will tell you that they could use yet another taller ratio, even with the 3.54 axle.

I find that the 5600 is pretty easy to drive in terms of gear selection. It *is* a little weird to cruise at such slow speeds in the high end of the gearbox. I mean, you shift 1-2-3 to get to 25mph, then you're in 4th at 30mph. Speeds from 40mph to 100mph are covered by just two gears! THAT seems weird to me. The first four gears cover a 30mph range, the last two gears cover 70mph range. Weird!

I think that my 5600/3.54 setup will be PERFECT with some bigger tires on there. That said, the 265s sure make it nice to cruise at 2k rpm right at 72mph or so. It's nice to have peak tq (900+) available for passing!

i run 3.54s with 285s on my dually with a nv5600. if it was geared a bit taller i would not mind it at all. i towed a 10k 33' holiday rambler last weekend back from the lake. even with the hx55 and the 19cm exhaust housing it did fine, but if i wanted to pass someone up hill i would down shift to 5th to make it quick.

and i say spend the money on the auto, if you price a 600 plus hp dual disk clutch set up you will find the auto is not that bad a price to pay for the upgrades.
