converting to a 6 speed......... What's best ??

I'm wanting to convert to a 6 speed, and throw away this 5 speed junk box.

My question is, What's all needed to do a full conversion, and is there a better year than others for the tranny.

How about bellhousing, and clutch ?? Same, or different ??

The early six speeds have a smaller input shaft. The bell housing is part of the six speed. The clutch will be different where you can either get a disk with the right input spline or go to the six speed clutch. To do that you will need either a redrilled flywheel or a new one. The driveshaft will have to be shortened six inches and if 4wd the front shaft lengthened six inches. A rear mount will have to be adapted and it does need the wide cross member, my '99 had it.

i just did the swap in my 97, the rear drive shaft had to be shorthed 5 11/16th's of a inch. i am just going to buy a front drive shaft from a 6 speed truck for the front. it is a awsome tranny for pulling a good load, all the gears are split just right. but it is not near as smooth shifting as my 5 speed was. but i also put in a southbend dual disk cluth that doesn't help speed shifting with all that weight. but this clutch is smoother than my con fe i had in it before and it is rated for sled pulling and 750 hp. it will light up all four rears in a heck of a 3rd gear smoke show.

The 6-speed will never shift as well as the 5-speed. The clutch is MUCH heavier, and that slows down how fast the synchros can match gearing.

The smaller the clutch, the faster the synchros can act, and therefore give you smoother shifting.
