Conflicting Advice

I need your opinions....I inquired with Piers and with TST and got 2 different answers to increasing my HP.
Piers says #10 plate .020-.030 forward, 3K spring kit, 215 injectors.
TST says #5 or #6 plate, maybe 16cm2 turbo housing, shift kit in tranny.
TST says injectors are a poor way to gain power and the 3k springs aren't recommended except for competition.
Seems like 2 different setups and which do you guys feel would be the best combo?

Re:Conflicting Advice

I went with the plate, 3000GSK, and 370 injectors. I like the set up.

Re:Conflicting Advice

I have never dealt with TST, although several of my friends have and are extremely happy.

I have dealt with Piers a lot. He makes more HP in valet mode than most do under normal circumstances on the dyno. I certainly would not have any trouble trusting his recommendations.

Did you explain to both of them where you want to go and what you want to use your truck for?

Re:Conflicting Advice

Hi, TST is a very very good source for imformation and great parts. They do often have a different opinion then other shops, cause they seem to stay on the more "milder" side when it comes to power inhancments. There are many shops that will sell you anything, they listen to what you think you may need and simply nod there head yes and sell away. I have had several incounter like this. But that is not giving an opinion. That is simply agreeing with you, so you will feel good about the purchase. I have delt with TST on several occasions, over a 5-6 year period, and I have always found there advice to be helpfull. And several times they would have sold more, if they would have just bobed there head up and down and told me what I wanted to hear. But they didn't and I do respect that, I like when someone has an opinion and gives it, even if it is not popular or what other might want to hear. I am very thankful that I went with my gut feelings and took TST's advice. I have what I wanted, more power, good mileage both pulling and not, not alot of smoke (wasted fuel),it starts great, run strong and I have every reason to believe it is as reliable as a stocker.

Re:Conflicting Advice

I think I will go with TST's recommendation for now, untill I make some tranny upgrades that is enough anyways. Has anyone ever installed pyro and boost guages from a semi? My Kenworth has Pyro and Boost, and they look like they should work in a smaller Cummins. I phoned a local Used truck parts and they said $20 a gauge and maybe $10 for the sender. Heck of a lot cheaper than new.....maybe I'll go pre and post turbo for fun.

Re:Conflicting Advice

Here in the real world the #10 and 3k's are about the best starting point that I've seen yet, Piers told me the same thing about it and I questioned it too but I had to listen and was he ever right. If you have a stock auto I would stay away from injectors unless there bad or you want to run less plate until you do the tranny. I did a 98' auto with a #10, 3k's and timing with the plate about 3/4 forward and it made 285/697 on the dyno.....questions!

Just an opinon here but the #5 and #6 plates are useless to me

Re:Conflicting Advice

I have talked to both TST and Piers and like both of them. The first thing that I did to my truck was put a #6 plate in from TST. It did help quite a bit. I still have the #6 in but have moved it around a lot trying to see what is best. Jim Fulmer told me to go to a #10 plate and he has done way more testing than I have so that is what I am going to try next. I would agree with not going with injectors until you get the tranny done. Good luck.

Re:Conflicting Advice

when I wanted a little more power after the 3 k gsk and a number 6 plate . I called piers and talked to him he recommended that I install 215 injectors he said that due to their spray pattern that it would actually cool down the egt's and gain around 50 hp I went with his advise and he was right on the money I gained more power and cooler exhaust. The man know's what he is talking about. Matt

Re:Conflicting Advice

If you are asking me{kandgo} I cannot answer,I went from stock truck to what I have, I do know it makes 27 to 29 on the boost and what I understand at what I have been told it is 1 psi boost to about 11 hp, I do know that the truck is as black to white when it was converted to what it is now.Might ask jim fulmer what he thinks. Re:Conflicting Advice

Couldn't tell you, what I will tell you is Piers sold me on the idea and now that I know more about pumps I understand why it works so well, it just a nice moon shaped fuel curve but needs 3k's to get the best benefit and they all need timing, probably should have a #10 to pass around, I have Rick's set up very mild as he has a stock tranny and the 12 cm housing still......no tricks on it yet either.

Jim

P.S. 215 injectors are really nice too.

Re:Conflicting Advice

Farmer ... this is an easy one.

You know that pop up you get in Windows that says "Always trust ... " & you click the little box? Well, substitute in Piers name & click the box.

What you'll find when you add fuel is you get to the governor cutoff really fast. The additional RPM is really nice for extending your hp / torque range, especially when towing. It makes all that new power more useable.

I've got the 4k springs & I don't race / competition. Not quite sure why that comment was made, but the added RPM sure is nice, especially with the 5 speeds & the long split between 2 of the gears.
