Man, I don't know if I live a charmed life or what?!?! (Pretty sure I don't! ) I have been running my tapped Comp with RV275's for awhile now with the stock clutch and have had no trouble. I gross the truck out quite heavy from time to time and the stock clutch continues to work great.....and I don't baby the truck, either. I have another friend with a 98.5 CTD tow truck that weighs 10,300 lbs empty and is bombed with a Comp and the stock clutches work great for him. I know it isn't just me.....so what is going on here? Because of my first hand experience with the 5 spd clutch, I would have to take exception to the notion that the stock clutch won't hold with mild bombs. More and more it seems like the stock 6 spd clutch just will not put up with much power over stock without folding.....most of the guys with 5 spd's and mild bombs seem to do just fine with the stocker.

So, is it me or what?

Funny, I had an EZ AND DD2s and the clutch held for 2 years.

Then a re-vamped the combo to an ECM and Mach 4s. Clutch held for 8 months, and only started slipping last week!!

What are you guys doing to these clutches to kill them so fast?

EDIT: MINE IS A SIX SPEED CLUTCH!!

I guess saying my stock clutch was fried was a bit harsh... I had managed to slip it a few times with just the EZ. It was still holding just fine but when we put in the injectors I decided to do a clutch at that time as well. The stock clutch still had plenty left in it but definitely showed signs of slippage and the flywheel had some spotting on it. I'm the second owner of the truck and bought it with about 23,000 miles on the clock... the 'spare' tire was bald and the tire that replaced it was well worn so I'm of the opinion that the previous owner liked to burn a little rubber so who knows the abuse the stock clutch went through before I bought the truck. I am by no means easy on the truck and I had no reason to believe the stock clutch would put up with the extra 100 or so ponies I was gonna put on top of the EZ.

The comp killed my stock clutch. You can make your clutch last if you don't want to ever get the full potential out of the box. When I first put it in I could slip it on 4x5 now it slips on 3x5 so maybe my clutch was a little weak to begin with. I'm going to try Haisley Machines 13" upgrade this summer. It's only $600 or so and will hold 500hp.

What more potential can you get out of a Comp than 5x5?

I tow with my Comp on 5x5 with RV 275's without any trouble from my stock 5spd clutch....when I tow with my camper and Jeep together (19,300 GCWR), I drop it down to 3x4 in the hills because of egt - not the clutch......I can tow 7000 - 8000 lbs comfortably on 5x5. I have a feeling that if your clutch is marginal before the Comp, it won't do well with the Comp but if your clutch is in reasonably good shape, it should do just fine with the Comp on kill.

Drag Comp (DD's version) installed at 33K... DDIII"s installed at 97K... stock clutch removed at 145K.. it was still going.. but I could make it slip on the higher settings.. Just keep the comp turned down while towing.. and watch the gauges...
