My '97 starts OK not plugged in with old batteries and cycling the heaters three times, down to like 15 degrees. Thats Fahrenheit Scottie
The old Detroit's lost starting ability in the cold when they went to turbos. Lower compression ratio but higher cylinder pressure.

Boy, I wish my 96' would do that Robert! Any temperatures below around 40 degrees and if my 96' is NOT plugged in, I have a hard time starting it unless I use ether. But,.....I am also running Scheid's Forged Arias Pistons and that may add to it.
However, in December I was up in Illinois and the overnight temperature got down to 3 degrees above zero! I had the 96' plugged in at the hotel and the following morning the truck started on the first try. So,....I try to keep that baby plugged in when it gets cold!

DOH!!!!
Yeah, I hear you on ALL that Robert! Fortunately for me, I live WAY back in the woods far away from any other houses, so when I roll the old 96' out of the garage on cold days that is one thing I don't have to worry about! Even with my truck being plugged in, it will still blue smoke pretty good until it warms up. I can knock down some of that blue smoke if I add pure cetane to the fuel with some "Stanadyne Lubricity Formula" and their "Performance Formula."
Good story.....................
