Cleaning the AFE pre-filter?

Any tips or tricks? I tried washing the yellow AFE fabric pre-filter by hand with dish soap, less than desirable results. Is this thing machine washable? Is there some better way to clean it?

This is from the Outerwears websites FAQ. Outerwears is the company that makes the prefilters for AFE.

How do I clean an Outerwears Pre-Filter? - 11/03/2004
The best method for cleaning an Outerwears Pre-Filter is to shake off any excess dirt and wash by soaking for 10 minutes with the concentrated Outerwears Pre-Filter Cleaner solution (1:15 ratio). After soaking, agitate the Pre-Filter in the Outerwears cleaner solution and water to remove any remaining debris and grime. Once the desired cleanliness has been obtained, shake off any excess water and air dry. If caught on a road trip or during a race without access to Outerwears Pre-Filter Cleaner and water, you can also remove a significant amount of dirt by simply shaking the Pre-Filter and allowing the excess dirt to fall off.

Hmmm... So I am supposed to buy some super-special pre-filter wash? Well that sucks

I've been told that you can just throw them in the washing machine but I've never tried it and don't know if you should leave the detergent out or not.
