Angry chip out of the tapered part in frount of turbo fins

When removing my silencer ring i inspected my turbo fins and in the tapered part in frount of the fins there were 2 small chucks out of it is this normal ware? it only has 26,000 miles on it. yall probly blame it on my K&N Ill just bang my head on the floor then!! too many mods to pass dealer inspection for warrentee work.

Has the turbo been kaing any funny noises? Has it been acting funny? What kind of boost are you seeing? If it doesn't do any of those things, then you should be alright.

Cool thanks i have no boost gauge and it whiles fine no odd noises at all are the chips common? and where did the chips go

Could the "chips" be material that was removed at the factory to balance the impellor?

I agree with infidel. If the "chips" look machined, then those are balancing marks.

Hopefully, they were factory machined as mentioned above. It shouldn't be too hard to tell.

THEY ARE NICE AND CLEAN LOOKING and kind of overlaping a bit thats a releif thanks all . I dont know why I never thought of that one does your guys turbo have these chips out of the tappered part also or was my turbo way out of ballance when it was built

My compressor wheel was definately balanced..... but they removed the material from the outside diameter with what looks like endmill cuts. This was on both the original wheel and my HX40 wheel I put on. You can't see the cuts with the metal compressor housing on. I'd have a really close look at the wheel to make sure it didn't get chipped. If it did, where are the parts? I hope either in the intercooler (most likely) or stuck on the grid heater. New parts can be had cheap at high tech turbo: www.htturbo.com

Pretty much every turbo I've seen has had some balancing done. They grind on the nut on the exhaust end, too. My old turbo looked like half the nut was missing.

That's why it's a major mistake to tighten the nuts on either end if you think they're loose.
You can throw it out of balance.
