Can someone please explain
As I understand it , the wire tapping boxes send a secondary
signal the the VP44 solenoid to increase fueling. Why can't the
programers out there do this with a software change to the ECM
telling it to send another signal right after the first. I'm like a lot
of others out there that don't feel comfortable tapping the pump wire.

It would be causing the same carnage inside the pump either way.
The act of piercing the wire doesn't cause the pump to fail.
The resulting changes that occur inside the pump due to the non-stock signal parameters are what cause the pump to die.
The tampered wire harness just gives the mechanic an obvious flag that the power has been enhanced via aftermarket equipment.

Dont loose sleep over tapping the wire. You hear alot about it because when someone taps the wire and the pump dies you can bet your bottom dollar that they post on here how tapping the wire killed their pump.
But there are thousands of people who tap the wire and have zero trouble, but they don't post "Hey I tapped the wire and my pump didnt die"
So, you have a innacurate feeling of tapping the wire failures just because of posts....
I bet if you got an honest data set of people tapping the wire and ran the numbers, the pump failures after tapping the wire would be less than 5%.
But, the bad news allways dominates the posts....
I tapped the wire after 80,000 miles on a stock pump and have had no trouble at all. And tons of others had had the same experience.
Bottom line, tap it and if you are in the 5% failure group, then buy a Hot Rod VP44....
