Can someone explain the differences in turbos

Im trying to figure out what the differences in performance, lag and EGT will be between these different turbos. Looking at phat shaft and super phat shaft and the different configs offered. Id like to stay small with a single for the response since its a DD in the city.
So what are the differences between the phat shaft and super phat shaft? what about the 62/12, 62/13 and 62/14?
Sounds like youre gradually exchanging lag for top end with the compressor?
Just not sure which I should buy. Preferably trying to find someone thats upgrading from a small turbo so I can buy used.
Truck specs are in my sig, but add DDP 75 or 90hp injectors that are going in soon. Trying to stay small until I go to twins.

You are correct with the assumption on lag vs high rpm loss. The tighter or smaller the exhaust housing the quicker the spool, but you sacrifice high RPM exhaust flow (read high EGT). With your mods I would probably hit the middle of the set with a 62/13. I have a more basic S300 with a slightly smaller than 13cm2 housing and its a little too tight for the high RPM range. Spools like stock though.

Kawi, what really makes the difference in all of those turbos is the exhaust turbine wheel.

The Phat Shafts have a 65mm exhaust wheel and 62,64, 0r 66mm compressor wheel. The larger the wheels, the slower the turbo will spool up.

On top of wheel size, you have the exhaust housing that also effects spoolup, top end HP and egts.

The Super Phat Shafts are the same 62,64,66, or 71mm compressor, but they are all mated up to a larger, heavier 71mm turbine wheel. The larger turbine wheel is slower to spool but will give more top end power potential and lower topend egts due to its ability to flow more exhaust.

The 71mm is only offered in 14cm housing cause a 12cm will not fit.

Now if you go over to HTT turbo, you have the same options plus they offer some new and improved stainless steel housings. In stainless they offer a 13cm housing that fits on a 71mm exhaust wheel. I also has much larger wastegates so it can flow more on the ragged top end, even use a little nitrous if you want.

For future twin turbo considerations, alot of guys go with the stainless housings because of the bigger wastegate that makes it better for twin turbos without an expensive external wastegate. If you are shooting for 600 HP or less, stick with the 62mm compressor, 65mm turbine and either 14cm cast or 13cm stainless. If you are shooting for over 600 HP, go with the 62/71/13. If you are going for big power, you should get a 64/71/13. Then when you build the twins, you would want a "super dave" for the bottom turbo. A super dave is a s400 turbo with an 80mm compressor aka s480.

Every single turbo is a compromise. You are correct that you trade lag for top end as you go up. Most air for the money is a phatshaft 62/htb2 or the slightly smaller super b, as far as singles go anyways. Super B Special seems the be the best I've seen for the money if you want a big single. I'm waiting to hear how Mike D likes his =P

II seems to recommend a 62/12 for this truck since it has pump mods. Im dondering if Id be happier with a 62/12 since its a 160hp pump. Maybe go with ddp2's and tinker with the plate position.

I think an HTB2 or PS62 w/12cm housing would be the good pick. Depending how tight of a converter you have, the tighter housing will be more drivable since it will light quicker. I've got a 62/71/14 and its a bit laggy for my tastes. Either a tighter housing or smaller turbine would be better for me I think. I also tend to drive my truck in the lower RPMs, I don't wind it out very often, so it would be comparable to driving an auto with a tight converter.

I'm looking to hit 600hp one day (hoping) as a daily driver. Haven't made up my mind if i'm going to try to get away with a single, or buy a decent size single now and add a bigger second later. Twins would be great, just trying to avoid the expense if possible.
