can i CHEAPLY recalibrate speedo and OD shift speed (do it myself) ?

Is there a CHEAP programmer I can buy (and learn how to use) that will allow me to recalibrate my speedo for larger tires, and also change where auto trans shifts into OD (change from about 45 to 55). I don't need/want performance, etc, etc. How much money would I have to spend to do this myself ?
Thanks, doug

I'd like to know the same thing for a '96 model.

Cheap doesn't exist in the Diesel Performance world.

I don't believe there is 1 box that will do both functions.

Smarty or Superchips (former preferred) will do speedo recalibration in addition to some engine performance enhancing.
Some off-the-shelf DRBII code readers will also reprogram the speedometer (I think?), but they aren't really cheap either, and often don't communicate well with our dual computer vehicles (ECM and PCM).

Most of the aftermarket auto transmission rebuilders have a box that will let you set the shif points,
or you could find an Emjay Strategy Programmer (I think thats the name), but you'll only find it on Ebay or Classifieds, as the inventor passed on and the family stopped making them.

Pretty sure speedometer reprogramming requires a speedo-gear change on your model, but I could be wrong.

Does the 96 have the 47RE or 47RH?

it has an RE, but 12v RE's are a little different than 24v's... the 2-3 shift can't easily be changed without a speedo gear change

He has a gasser truck.

Anyway, like the others said, you can't program the tranny w/ a programmer on the dodges like you can some other makes.

I had a hypertech on my '01 1500 gasser and it let me change the speedo for tire size, but no tranny options.

yeah, that's what I am reading. Hypertech says some things to lead you to believe they do (reprogram shift points), but whatever it does is under control of their pre-programmed choices, not mine. Superchips also has a gasser model, but it is also limited to a couple of preprogrammed performance options. Nothing wrong with that for those who want it, but its just not what I am looking for. All I want to do is delay the shift from 3rd to OD until I've actually got some speed up and going somewhere (about 55) instead of when i'm just bopping along at 40-45, where it hunts up/down in/out of OD. I'm just glad its got a OD on/off button on the shifter. Hope I don't wear it out. Searching on Emjay Strategy Programmer, maybe something will turn up. Thanks, Doug.

wow... impressive device.
Strategy(tm) Lock-n-Launch(tm) Controller
from Emjay Engineering LLC

The Emjay Engineering Strategy(TM) Transmission Controller for Dodge RAM Cummins TD Pickup has a new option called Lock-n-Launch(TM). Lock-n-Launch locks the torque converter clutch at full throttle for manual-trans like launch off the line, maximizing low-end torque transfer to the wheels. The controller still has all of the standard Strategy features, including TCC control, Shift Curve Control (Patent Pending), Exhaust Brake Control, Overdrive Lockout, and to top it off, three profiles selectable on the fly with an in-cab switch! Now you can have optimized profiles for street performance, towing, sled pulling, racing, or whatever with the flick of a switch! No other controller even comes close to the quality and features of the Strategy controller.

SKU / Part Number: EMJ-1LE (no longer offered)
Compatibility Notes: All 1996-present Dodge RAM Cummins Turbo Diesel Pickups with 47RE or 48RE automatic transmission
