Sure I would like to have a set of twins. But............it adds up to a lot of money even with a "budget" set. It's not just the twins. ATS Manifold ($460), replace tranny heat exchanger with a tranny cooler like Summit sells or whatever ($350), O'Ring the head ($300), works better with a cam ($500 to $1500) and should port the head ($??? for the additional flow needed). So............while the advertised price is...........one would really need to add about $1610 plus the price of the porting and then don't forget the labour. I don't have the skills to install a cam and the professionals will tell you that it is a 10-12hour job just for the cam, so add another $500 to 600$ minimum which puts us at $2210 plus the cost of the twins. Then we have to assume anyone going that route better have the drive train to back it up. $1200 for a SB clutch plus installation, or about $3000 for an auto including torque converter. Then if you have more air you can get bigger injectors (there goes another $800 less whatever you can get for your used injectors).

Gets expensive quite fast doesn't it.

Did I mention you would need a drag comp or a TST stack?

I can't afford twins! Maybe if I won the lottery. Hell, I already got about $8500 invested in my truck.

Respectfully,

Roger

Follow up Hohn. I don't mean to flame this thread and I respect your thirst for knowledge. Each of us enthusiasts (fanatics) have to make up our own mind on how far to go with this Bombing thing. And believe me, I am not the kettle calling the pot black. I thought I knew where I wanted to go and am probably bout there. You must decide what you are going to do with your vehicle. Towing, dragging, sled pulling, dusting ricers etc. Then decide on how much HP you need/want. Actually, DD's configurator is pretty darn close to reality. I applaud them.

If you want 500rwhp from a truck (a little bit easier for the ETH guys) then you don't really need twins at all. Drag Comp or something like it, DonM's EDM 3.4's minimum, a minimum of a Dodgezilla 35/40 hybrid turbo or a PDR40 or DD Jammer or the like, the necessary air intake and 4" exhaust and fuel system mods and you are right there. Over that HP then you must go twins if you want to stay with running straight #2 diesel. Always bearing in mind once again, will your drive train hold up?

no flame taken.

You are right to point out all the "hidden" costs with certain upgrades. My stopping point will probably be much sooner than most of us want to admit. It gets out of hand too easily.

I am really hesitant to push the headgasket, so that's probably going to be the hardline.

I guess "budget twins" is an oxymoron for sure, like "jumbo shrimp" or "military intelligence".

Methinks an upgraded single should get me by for a few years

Hmmm... I wonder if a KSB1 is enough air for Mach 4s? mwahahaha!
