Broken tailgate cables ????
#16
Well I went to AutoZone to check out their tailgate cables. They have 2 models for 2nd Gen Dodge Rams, #38522 for 94-98 and #38535 for 99-02. They look identical. I took them out of the packages and could tell them one from another. Both are advertised as being 18.25" long.
Only kicker is that the 94-98 one is $14.99 and the 99-02 one is $7.99.
So I bought the less expensive 99-02 one and it fit on my 97 just fine. Imagine that. Must be some kind of marketing thing.

The problem with the cables is that with the tailgate closed they will draw water and salt (if you live in a region where they use it) and then they rust through. I went through several sets in the first few years, all of them were rusted where they broke.
Since I was really fed up with that I took some steel rope grease, mixed it with gasoline until it was very liquid and let the new ones soak in the mix (covered) for 3 days.
Took them out, wiped them dry, installed them and after approx. 5 years no rust on the cables
