boost gauge problems

the guy i bought my truck from had the gauges in my sig installed but not hooked up. i hooked up my boost gauge the other night buy the method of a 3/4 brass reducer into the intake right behind the fuel filter bracket and in from of the map sensor not behind it. i was searching through how to posts and came up with this method by replacing the plug that is there with this. everything is hooked up and tight and i am getting absolutly no reading. once yesterday it jump to just less than 5 pounds and stuck their and each time i started the truck got a little bit lower until zero again. the gauge is from autometer could it be bad? or did i do something wrong?

My bet is that the line to the gauge is kinked, easy to do.
I always thread the small tubing though some 1/4" tubing. Not only does it make it easier to work with but also protects against kinks, cuts and abrasion.

Look for a crimped line, Also check the compression fittings on the back of the gauge and the intake. Overtightening will crimp the tube.

the compression fittings were somewhat tight but still had a small opening, no kinks or anything. i took the hose off of the gauge and started the truck to see if there was boost and i couldnt feel any air.

You don't get much boost at idle, not sure if you would feel any from the tube....

i revved it up thought. did i put it in the right hole or is it supposed to be behind the map sensor. when i took the plug out it had a bit of like wet black soot on the plug for the intake is this normal.

Unless the engine is under load you will get very little boost with the truck sitting there.

I have seen farrels crimp of the line. i would disconnect the lines and fittings and check for kinks. you can also put air to one end of the line and make sure its passing if yo uhave a compressor of some sort

Most people (I believe) put the tube in the airhorn or use a boost bolt - if you're running it someplace you're getting soot, you will plug the line quckly!

i know most said you can get the boost bolt through genos garage but they were like 18 bucks someone said you could get them somewhere for like 6$. where is the cheapest i can get a boost bolt. i am just going to install a boost bolt, i will cover the boost line with another line and i will slowly narrow down the problem.

Chris, save your money, the place you hooked up to behind the the filter works just fine and is where the majority of people hook up.
No problem with soot clogging up lines on any boost gauge as there is no flow though the line, just pressure change, as it's a dead end.

Did you try blowing or sucking on the line to see if the guage moves. it should being it is mechanical. Maybe set a compressor to 10 psi and shoot it in the line to see if the guage moves. If not pull off both ends and blow through it.
