Boost fooler/elbow or both

I have a 2002 H.O. with a 6 speed. My only mods are superchips on perf-tow mode, straight piped, BHAF, and silencer ring M.I.A. I have quite a bit of black smoke on acceleration after the superchips mod. One question is whether I should install a boost fooler/elbow, or both. I don't know whether I can install an elbow or not on a 2002, anyone know? If I can install both would it be recommended, or would just the fooler work. Also would either or both of these help with performance and my black smoke issue?

Thanks

You have to do both.

One without the other won't do anything.

Elbow without fooler will defuel if boost gets over 20.
Fooler without elbow will still wastegate at 20.

Yes, 2002 HX35 will accept the elbow.

It's the HY35 equipped auto tranny 2002's that can't use the elbow.

So if I install a boost fooler will I see any type of performance gain, and if so where in the rpm range. Will it help clear up my black smoke?

Boost is not want some guys think. Big boost numbers dont mean more power without adding more fuel. This is because boost is a byproduct of the heat and air generated from the cylinders. And the more fuel you pump in the cylinder the more heat you get. As you can tell by yourself, if you just mash the throttle in N you might get around 2-3 lbs of boost but do that while driving and you get a much higher number. So to try to get more boost without adding more fuel (in a low HP setup) is kind of a waste of time. The reason you see guys trying to get more boost (or better yet, more air volume) is because boost is a way of keeping EGT's from getting out of hand. And actually to much boost will overspeed your stock turbo and create more heat than doing you good. Thats why guys get bigger turbos. I know I probably have totaly screwed you up here and I'm sorry but its harder to explain then it is to understand. Just keep reading stuff here and you'll see clear.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I have the same superchips programmer with the same smoke issues. I am on Tow/Safe mode because it is a big diference with my big tires, tall gears, and heavy weight on the bed. I was told to get a boost fooler also never heard that I needed an elbow too. I may have been misinformed and I myself have no idea so is this 100% true. Hell, I dont even know what an elbow and fooler look like or where they go on the turbo.

So what can I do about getting rid of my black smoke issue? Anyone!!! I'd prefer not to get rid of the superchips.

Boost fooler doesn't let the ECM see over 19 (or whatever the limit is) of boost so it doesn't turn down the fuel,
this is an electronic device that connects between the MAP sensor and the ECM.

Boost elbow bleeds off the excess pressure in the wastegate actuator so the wastegate doesn't open and limit the boost to 19-20.

You need both, one without the other cancels out the benefits.

Boost foolers can be had at most high performance Diesel shops.
Most fueling/timing boxes have a built in boostfooler, superchips being a reprogrammer for the ECM don't include one.

Boost elbows can be had at same.
Or you can make one yourself with a turnbuckle and some j-hooks.

A search for "turnbuckle" should net description and even pictures.

HOdiesel80, the stock turbo on your truck will work great up around 35# boost. As others have said, you need both items - a boost fooler to electronically trick the ECM and a boost elbow to mechanically keep the wastegate from opening as soon. There may even be some guys with the elbows floating around after upgrades, maybe they'll chime in. You will notice an increase in power and a decrease in smoke once the turbo is allowed to generate more boost.
Turbo Deeezle- same for the boost fooler, but you gotta find the turnbuckle or spring or j-hook method of adjusting your wastegate. The manual trans trucks have a small air line from the charged air side of the turbo to the wastegate housing for actuation, the autos use a mechanical linkage for actuation (and a smaller exhaust housing on the turbo, so max boost is down around 30-32#)
