Re:Boost, elbows and such...

I have an auto so my choice was to use the j-hook method of disabling the gate. Took me about a 1 1/2 years to get around to doing it. Didn't add any noticable power but hoping it might help with the egts a little towing through the mountains. With just an ez it went from 20 to 28lbs boost (although there was no boost elbow due to the hardline in before to compare a before and after too). I think the only real worry about disabling the gate completely is running the turbo out of its map/efficency range which will end up doing not much more than increasing your charge air temp and its associated issues and spinning it faster than it was designed to possibly shortening the lifespan of the turbo over time. I think one question that would need to be asked is what is the max range for the turbo and how often would you be exceeding it by blocking it off. For me personally since I hooked it I bet it hits 28lbs less than 1/10 of one percent of the time it is driven. Since my little hy is probably hitting its max range at or about 28psi I am not worried about it. A comp however can surely makes more boost than the ez and your hx35's map is cetainly higher than the hy's.

Re:Boost, elbows and such...

The HX 35 will spin right up to 45 psi of boost (WG disabled) with the comp and injectors, It will do that with about 80 LBS of drive pressure (bad) then with will most likey have a wheel burst.
Anything above the 32-38 psi is going to cost you HP like Diesel Freak said. One of the main reason for the elbow is to keep EGT in check and add a little more air for the burn.

According to what Piers told me, the Stock HX 35 should not be run past 34 psi. the purpose of the boost elbow is of course to prevent the wastegate from opening up and limiting boost -- but you still need a wastegate in there if you have the fueling to support more than 34 lbs. Ergo, the Piers adjustable boost elbow -- adjust it to whatever you want your max boost to be.

Gary...As I don't know what injectors you're running, and I'll assume they are stock or step-up one size, by blocking the wastegate or disabliling it completely will probably not get you more boost. More fuel will increase the potential for more boost.
More fuel=more boost=more power=more egt's (FBPE). As you and others have indicated, each turbo has a max. "safe" operating boost level. This max "safe" operating boost level, should not be considered, everyday 24/7 safe. Like everything else, this will shorten the usable life of the turbo. Higher boost levels then the "safe" max. will considerably shorten turbo life and puts you in the "oh no" phase. I know, because I have gone through 10+ different turbo's and combinations in my quest for performance.
Steve
My setup, with the Comp, and towing up grades, will do somewhere between 32-34 psi with the Comp on 5x5 - EGT stays 1200 or less, depending on length of grade. I understand the max efficiency limit with these turbos is right around 32 psi, so I can't complain, was just curious as to whether any more was really available or not...
To more directly answer your question: your installed boost elbow (that shipped with the comp) is limiting (wastegating) your HX 35 to about the right level. Much more and you'll be pushing the turbo past its efficiency map and that means diminishing returns and a higher risk of a shortened turbo life. You might consider putting in the Piers adjustable elbow to tweek things, and you might eek out a couple more pounds (you might attain a 34-35 lb maximum more consistently). Personally, and based on the Piers recommendation for the stock HX, I wouldn't go beyond this point, especially if you pull long grades and maintain these high boost levels for some time.

Yes, Gary, you don't want to mess with your setup. Wastegates are needed on the smaller turbos because if they aren't there, drive pressures can scream, causing a drop in HP and a rise in EGT. High EGT and low HP is not a good combo!

I see 32psi with my HX. I won't push it past that point. I just have EZ and 2s. I am not adding any more power without a turbo(s) being part of the equation.

HOHN
