Boost Elbow ???'s

I keep hearing about this, Is this the thing that will let you put more boost into the engine, and the computer doesn't defuel?

You actually need a boost elbow and a boost fooler. Many boxes (such as the Edge EZ and Comp, the DD TTPM and UFM) have the boost fooler function built into them.

The boost elbow is the little brass elbow on the side of your turbo that is connected to the waste gate. The one everyone is talking about has a small hole in it to bleed off air pressure. This allows the boost to go higher before opening the waste gate. You will still need a boost fooler like what is in the Edge and other products as listed above to keep from defueling and setting codes.

Just so you have an idea. I have an edge ez and I installed the boost elbow and only gained 3 psi. max of boost. I'm only up to 22 psi.

On my truck, the various boost pressures and pre-turbo EGTs are as follows:

Stock - 22 PSIG, 1300 degF EGT

EZ (with boost elbow), 4" exhaust - 30 PSIG, 1100 degF EGT

EZ (with boost elbow), 4" exhaust, DD2 injectors - 34 PSIG, 1225 degF EGT

Could be a lot of things. Boost leaks. Internally fouled intercooler. Dirty air filter. Poor turbo efficiency. Cracked exhaust manifold or exhaust manifold leaks. Wastegate or wastegate actuator/piping leaking. You may just need more fuel to make more boost. It's hard to say without diagnosing the truck firsthand.

i can't really see why anyone uses a boost elbow. i just plug them off and if it starts putting out better than 40 psi i put on a bigger exhaust housing.

i would suggest you tighten down the allen screw all the way in your boost elbow first.

It sounds like you might have something wrong. I can spool up to 25 psi without trying hard. What setting is your EZ on?
Have you checked you lift pump pressure? If it’s real low at WOT then you’re not getting enough fuel to the VP44. You need more power to spool up that turbo.
It might be a good idea to check all the boots as mentioned above. You will have to put a wrench on them because they can look tight but be loose enough to leak under pressure. If this is the problem you will most likely be seeing high EGTs.
Hope this helps.

Alright, I'll go check all those and tighten them and look for leaks. I STILL havent gotten my Fuel pressure guage hooked up yet so I cant tell you what that is but I am planning on buying a LP soon. As far as the ez settings go, I can't remember what setting it is on but what setting do I want it on for the most power and most smoke? All the way to the left or all the way to the right? Thanks

When my truck had 0 psi of FP at WOT, I made almost 41 pounds of boost on my HY35. I had a comp set up as an EZ. I'd check for loose intercooler boots. Those have a nasty habit of leaking.

1. Be sure to watch for boots that have just started to pull out from under their clamps. Many times that will be the problem.

2. Yep, a bad lift pump might be starving the VP-44 for fuel under maximum load - in addition to risking the VP-44, that could starve the turbo for drive energy. I believe one of the TSB symptoms is stumbling or loss of power complaints under heavy loads - like towing up a hill.

3. With the end cover off and the Edge Products logo on top, position #3 (earliest fueling) will have the jumper at the far right. If you haven't changed it, that's where it should be - they ship them with a default setting of position #3.

So all the way to the right is where I will get the most bang for my buck with the ez correct?

Yep. Position #3 starts fueling at the lowest boost. Maximum BHP and torque won't be any different - the fuel will just hit "earlier" in position #3.
