All they do is vent off extra boost pressure, not needed unless you are building way too much boost for you're turbo

My understanding of a blowiff is this. After you get off the fuel there is x amount of air pressure from turbo to the engine. This air wants to come back out the compressor side of the turbo because nothing is driving the turbo anymore thus attempting to stop the compressor wheel right now. In larger industrial engines I have seen heavy loads immediately taken off engines and turbo cartridge shafts sheared. Pop off valves dump this compressed air before it can come back into the compressor wheel to immediately try to stop it. I don't know if there is a setup for these trucks or not.

I think BD has a blowoff valve setup for our trucks that operated off the skinny pedal. It will open when you lift, allowing the boost to vent in a way that doesn't try to twist the turbo into a pretzel.

Thats just a tial 50 mm blow off valve from what I can see. I run one on my 468 turbo'd pontiac motor.
They sell for about $220.00
Check it out.
put the extra $400 in your pocket!!

The BD is controlled off of your TPS so there is more to it then just a simple blow off valve. In a diesel there is no thorotle plates to close instantly causing a very high spike in boost pres. to trigger the blow off valve.

Yeah exactly. To properly run a bov in a diesel you'll need one with an electronic valve to open and close it.

I guess I spoke too soon. This diesel stuff is a lot differnet I guess.
The picture it showed looked exactly like my tial 50.
Thats why I am here though to learn this stuff

I would think that if it didn't spike quickly enough to pop the valve there would be no chance of spinning back the turbo and shearing the shaft?

Many guys don't even run them on there gas drag cars and get away with it.
It does help keep the boost up on the gear changes too though because the turbo doesn't slow its RPM that much. so Thats a benefit at least on gas engines.

Im not 100% sure but what i think happens is that your turbo will de-spool ( if thats even a word) so fast when you go from WOT to all most no exhaust passing through your turbo that the built up boost cant make it through your engine faster than your turbo is de-spooling so it trys to take the path of least resistance which then becomes back trough your turbo.

The only reason I'd like to have one is because I think they sound cool. I see no real benefit from it unless you're running lots of horsepower. I wish I could get one for $100...

BTW, do big rigs have bov's? I can hear a swoosh sometimes when they change gears in the city.
