BLACK SMOKE

I've had some extensive work done to my 95 Dodge Cummins, 3/4 ton 4X4. I had the Banks Turbo and exhaust installed along with a BD auto trans and torque converter, deep pan, torque lock, exhaust brake and a new BD injector pump with a fuel cam that makes this thing run great. ;D My only problem is there is far more black smoke out the tailpipe than before these modifications. I could dial the fuel back a bit but I don't really want to loose any of the new power I am getting. I tow a 36foot 5th wheel and members of our caravan report the black smoke coming from under my rig. Any thoughts on this and what the tradeoffs are? ??? Also, I've been reading the thread on the Scotty air system and I am just about ready to dump my K&N filter in the stock box and get a Scotty. I sure could use some help on bringing down the EGT on this thing. Thanks.

Re:BLACK SMOKE

If ya get stacks, the smoke will come out the top. ;D Seriously, though, more air can't hurt. More air means more fuel burning and less smoke. Maybe an even bigger turbo is the answer? I think the Banks is just a hybrid HX35, maybe it's time to step up to an HX40?

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Ahaaaaaaaaaaaa...The old smoke problem. More fuel=more power=more smoke=more EGT's...To balance this puzzle, more air, less fuel, lower EGT's. There is not ONE reciepe for everyone, as there are thousands of combinations of trucks, modifications, altitude and additute to over come. Do some reasearch, check with others who have simular trucks and set-up. As they say in the series X-FILES " the thruth lies out there somewhere"..Good Luck.

Steve

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Bob1948 I was haveing the same problem so I called piers diesel research and talked to piers and he recomended that I slide the fuel plate to the rear of the truck a small amount and I would not notice much power loss so I checked the governor lever adjustment and slid the plate toward the rear of the truck about a 1/16 inch and it cooled it down considerably and he was right I can not tell any power difference.

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Will turning the star wheel being any relief? When I had the emissions test done, the diesel shop gave it a couple of turns so it would pass the opacity bull--it test required. Will sliding the cam plate aft necessitate adjusting the start wheel as well? ???

Re:BLACK SMOKE

The star wheel will cut the initial black smoke and also some power on take off but you will still have high egt's you will not have to readjust the star wheel if you slide the plate. How much boost are you makeing?

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Right now I am getting 30 inches of boost. I have been looking at doing some modifications to the filter box to allow more air into it. I had thought of cutting a hole in the aft side and a corresponding hole aft where the Scotty air goes and putting a piece of semi rigid flex pipe in to help gather up more air. But, I have noticed the filter sucker slides down somewhat even though I have a new K&N filter installed. What do you think?

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Bob1948 Did you remove the boot between the air box and fender I could pull the filterminder about half way up until I removed that and now it never moves with just the k&n .

Re:BLACK SMOKE

No, I haven't thought of that, but I will try it. Most of the high performance filers arrangements cost about 2-3 hundred bucks and I don't want to spend that kind of money for an air filter. I have been toying with the idea of opening up a hole in the stock air box and running a piece of flex tubing to the front of the engine compartment to pick up some fresh air and route it to the air box in addition to the normal air intake. Also, the Scotty takes air from the well below the windshield, I had thought of cutting the hole in the same place and routing a piec of flex ducting to a corresponding hole in the air box to pick up that cool, fresh air. Either way it should provide more air that the current arrangement is lacking. The engine is starving for air and the stock air box is too restrictive. Any thoughts on this?

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Bob I just bought what they call a bhaf {big honken air filter} part number napa 2790 it is a huge filter that you have to remove the air box and connect it directly onto the intake hose it seemed to help my egt's even more than the K&n in the stock box. I was considering doing the hole in the cowl thing until I talked to some guy's that have done it with the other filters and they say it is quite noisey my turbo whine is pretty loud now and I don't want it any louder but I think it would definately be a benifit. I just did not like what I had read about a K&n filter not filtering the air real well so I wanted to try a paper filter that is why I bought the bhaf. It is cost 42.00 but I think it will take care of my problem cause I can not get it over 1200 degree's now.
Re:BLACK SMOKE

Outstanding, thanks for the info. ;D I have been surfing all over trying to find the correct filter element. I found the Fleetguard and WIX filters but not the NAPA number. I'll go there in the morning and pick one up. I wasn't too keen on hacking up the air box, anyway. If it will help keep the EGT down, I will be happy. Thanks a lot and I'll let you know how things turn out. Stay cool. 8)

Re:BLACK SMOKE

Bob:
I did what you plan I cut a hole in the cowl as for a Scotty II and used a 4' flex tube to the lower portion of the stock box. It helped but not enough. So I installed a BHAF and that helped until about 350hp and then I needed more cool air. I installed a Scotty II air system and ran a third air pickup from the valance on the drivers side to the bottom of the Scotty II. Of all the filter systems I have had the Scotty II air system in the best for cool air and the sound is sweet music.
Bruce

Bob:
To control your smoke check the classifieds for Valet switch or do a search for valet there are two ways of doing it the on-off unit and the three way unit on-off & varaible.
Bruce

Re:BLACK SMOKE

OK, I went to NAPA and got the 2790 air filter and put it on. It was 50 bucks, not too bad considering the alternatives. It appears to smoke less although I haven't towed anything yet. It is a BHAF but it nests in there nicely (after the old air box and air boot is removed ;D) and it looks outrageous sitting there. The duct to the turbo clamps onto the flange nicely, as well. ;D
If this doesn't work as desired, the next step will be the valet switch. Stay cool. 8)
