Billet VS Stock shaft difference

Hey guys is there any way to tell the difference between a billet input and output and the stock ones when looking at them while installed in a trans? So if the trans was out of the truck sitting on the floor would they be distinguishable somehow?

Input is easy to spot, look at the splines where it stabs into the TC. Output not as easy. Usually, you can see the color of the metal and tell.

Thanks for the reply Fred
Could you be more specific as I don't have both side by side to compare. Is the billet shinier or duller, and what difference am I looking for at the splines? Thanks

Input the outside diameter of the splines should be the diameter of the shaft. Output look at the radius where it goes from shaft to gear, if it is a right angle it is stock, if it curves or blends into the gear it is a billet. DTT / IE shafts are a silver/bright steel in color. I have seen other brands of inputs black or grey. Tim

BEING A NEWBEE IN TRANNYS...

HOW FAR DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE TRANNY APART TO TELL?

I bought a whole used BD tranny... it works fine, just have no idea what the innards are, xcept a BD tq converter

If I understand Tim above you you shouldn't have to take the input apart but it sounds like the tail housing has to come off. I hope to get a look on Tues and see if I can figure it out. I don't know about your neck of the woods but the BD out here (Abbotsford, B.C. )doesnt do to much in the way of billet shafts...
