Is a bigger exaust elbow better?

Hi fellow dieselers,

I'm going to be ordering some kind of 4" exhaust system for my 2001. Mostly to give myself a bit more room with the egt's when towing. My mods should only go as far as a Van Aaken chip, 4" exhaust, BHAF, gauges and a FASS pump. My concern is that I want to do the exhaust right the first time. Is the elbow off the turbo considered restrictive? Is going with a power elbow or one of those fancy megamouth downpipe's practical or should I save the $$ and run a 4" aluminized system from the stock elbow? Some sort of muffler will be a must for me. So many options to choose from: 4", 5" w/ 4" duals, banks monster exhaust with power elbow option.....

I appreciate any advice, this is ultimately my work truck but my baby too. Picking up the truck this weekend and already have a bunch of things to bolt on. ~Gerald

This is on your 2001 in your sig? No change in temps from stock to 4" , good to know. Couple of others have told me to just keep the stock exhaust as well. It needs to be of some benefit before I'll buy a system.

4" BANKS MONSTER TURBO BACK

I just installed mine last night. I also installed the gauges and a J-hook. I don't know what my perameters were before the mod as far as temp, but my RPM's dropped from 2100 at 65 mph to just under 2000 rpm. I might save some go juice after all.

Until about 350hp, the 3" is fine...past that, the 4" will lower temps!! Even as you get closer, it will help keep temps down!!

as said by 600 it will reduce temps at higher hp's december is a tough time to see the benefits, drag a load up a grade in july.....that is where you will see the egt's drop. as for 5" you will not need it.

Hey guys, not to hijack the thread, but my '98 12v has the stock elbow on the stock turbo also. I suspect the turbo itself is causing some high egt's, but what about the elbow? If I'm on the highway and I hammer it, egt's will shoot up QUICK.

Please explain, you did not change your gear ratio, you did not change tire size, you did not change transmission ratio's, and you did not change your torque converter, but your RPM's at the same speed changed?????

The thread title is referring the new fangled exhaust elbow & elbow/down pipe. I saw it on EBay, then 2 hours later see that it is for sale here too.

This is a pretty steep claim they are making (350 degrees). I am surprised that no-one else is chiming in on that alone.

I would really like to see/hear some real life feedback on these things. Not that I am of maybe ever will be will modified enough to worry about it. It just sounds like a huge number for some reason.

Thing about it is, is that it's not just a "Well, I go ahead and throw it on there while I'm doing it" kind of thing, it's quite expensive, like equal to or more than the some entire exhaust systems.

Ya, ebay has just the cooleeze elbow only that simply replaces the stock elbow. You can attach pretty much any 4 or 5" system to that or the stock stystem for that matter. The trouble with just the elbow is that although the turbo outlet size is increased, it still reduces to 3" to mount to these exhaust systems. I figure the best way to get benefit is to get the elbow that has the 4" downpipe (ebay also) and fabricate some sort of connection between the downpipe and the new 4" exhaust.

This arrangement seems good in theory but these little items are pricey and are likely geared for those pushing 400 hp. The banks monster exhaust and power elbow looks like a simple install, and may be the best option after all the costs and time are figured. Stainless steel to boot. Best price I've found is $769. I'll consider it when I see my temp numbers next summer.
