Big Question
Help!
I have a chance to jump into a 05 thus trading in my 01 cummins
I plan on puttin down about 500 hp with 1000 torque. Is one better suited for this
Is one for any given reason (drivetrain/utility/hotdoggin/plowing) better than the other
is ther any difference between the structure of the engine/transmission?

A lot more time proven HP options available for your 2nd Gen truck, IMO.
I love the look of the 3rd Gen CTD....I have twice gotten the itch. All it takes it a test drive at the dealers to see have much better my "fixed up" 02 drives.
