Question BHAF v. Drop-In Comparison?

I don't want to drop $200+ on a shiny air filter. I'm thinking either AFE, AmSoil or BHAF.

Does AFE make their drop-in in Pro-GUARD?

I couldn't find a price for the AmSoil nanofilter. Interested, but can't find anything about it on anyone's site.

Primary goal is EGT reduction and secondary goal is power increase. My truck will have the below mods plus a Goerend tranny rebuild, j-hook on stock HY35, and Jammer stage 3 nozzles.

Searched through the previous filter threads, but didn't find any direct comparisons between drop-ins and the BHAF. Thanks again all.

A different filter in the stock airbox will not be a lot of help with exhaust temps. You really need to look at a different turbo and an intake kit to keep it cool, especially with injectors and towing your trailer. And you do have 4" exhaust, right?

My biggest reason for using something like the BHAF is that it gets securely clamped, instead of being 'sandwiched' between two pieces of plastic in the air box. It seals alot better. And flows more than the airbox is capable of. But like said above, to get good reductions, you'll need a turbo that's matched to the fueling you've added.

If you want a good air intake for cheap....buy a AFE stage 2 filter off the guy on ebay for $60 & make a air box out of metal. If you have basic knowledge working with metal....it is easy. My friend built one & it looks way better than my AFE kit....only cost him $70.

I've looked at turbos, but was trying to see what I could do without spending the extra money to upgrade there. And that's a negative on the exhaust. From what I've gathered, the stock 3" is sufficient for the kind of power I'll be making, so I figured I'd stay with the stock.

I'd like to talk the wife into another grand for a turbo and exhaust, but not sure I could do that after talking her into money for the tranny! It's easy to talk her into fixing things that could possibly leave her on the side of the road, but even I couldn't figure out how to put that spin on bigger injectors!

Women love to "get even". Just wait until a tailgater follows you real close & say "I wish I had injectors so that I could smoke him out" or just buy her a diamond & you get the injectors as a even trade. LOL

Just my experience here. I don't have the level of power you are running, but I am at high altitude. I have a 4" exhaust and I've tried the AFE pro-guard 7 drop-in. it did not reduce EGT's at all that I could notice. I switched it out for the Amsoil Endurance filter mainly because I was tired of always cleaning / oiling the pro-guard. With the Endurance filter, I don't think I noticed any EGT reduction either. And after the 4" exhaust install from turbo down, I think I only noticed a small reduction while driving / towing.

After all these changes, it still takes the same amount of time to "cool-down" as before.

One reason I did NOT go with the BHAF is noise. The noise of the turbo while cruising at certain RPM's got annoying with just the snorkel and silencer ring removed. So I put the silencer ring back in. But that is personal choice.

I have a friend with a Edge Comp Drag box and DD3s who has the HX35 and 4" exhaust and an AFE mega-cannon air filter. His EGTs are totally in control and cool-down times are very impressive and this at high altitudes.

I would say with your mods you would be maximizing your value with a BHAF and your own heat shield or just getting some sort of new air box replacement from AFE, etc like you mention. In fact, you can use the BHAF without a heat shield until you want one. It will be loud tho.

Bottom line, drop-ins don't seem to help EGTs at all, no matter which one you choose.

Thanks for this awesome info! It's exactly what I'm looking for. I think I'll go with the injectors and BHAF as planned. Silencer ring will remain in place. If it gets hot I'll just have to teach the wife to keep her foot off the gas. She digs the loud diesel sound, so I might be able to talk her into an exhaust!
