bfg's at's 285/16

I just bought a set of BFG's At's today. They didn't have the 265's so I got a good deal on 285's, I really don't know if I like the bigger tire's. Seems to sway more and work the truck harder with more pulling around on the snow that was on the side roads today. They sure do look good on the truck. Better than the 265's I'd say. I took a set of Firestone's Wilderness's off 265's. they were too light of tire and half gone. What do you guy think of the bigger tire's? I 'm a littler worried about millage falling off. Thinking about taken them back.

When I bought my truck it had 295s on it and recently I put 305s on it. Really looks great and helps fill out the wheel well.

I have a 2 wheel drive with LT265/75R16 now and I
think they look too small in the wheel opening. I'm going
to move up to LT285/75R16 this weekend. Sears is having a sale
on General Tire All Terrain LT285/75R16 for $109.75 ea. Has anyone
used these with good results ?

My truck had the bfg 285's on it when I bought it. It seemed to wander alot, like the sidewalls flexed too much. When they wore out I put Yoko 245 75 16's on. I went with the smaller tire to get a little more pulling power. It handles better and doesn't wander any more.

I'm on my second set of BFG AT 285s and love them. Sidewall flex on any bigger tire is a issue if you like the hard ride from 80psi in a 10ply. The taller tire will cost you some milage in town but you should make up for it on the hwy.

very true...I definitely didt like the ride with the 10 ply LTX's....the 295 grabbers I put on ride and perform GREAT. Couldnt be happier (well maybe if I went to 315's).

I found I have to run my 285 BFG's at 60lbs+ or they flex like crazy and wander all over....

also I still get 22mpg with them on the highway with the cruise set at 2000rpm

bigger, wider tires will wander more, esp in the snow. They leave a bigger footprint. If you live near Pa, maybe we can work a deal for those tires?!? Email me at hamyscj@dejazzd.com if you want.

I may stick with the 285's. I would like to get a set of factory Alloy wheels for it. at least then they would be on a 8 inch rim and the rims wounldn't run out. Right now there's 5 ounch of weight on both side of the rim to get them to balance out.

I went out and played in a snow pile today. Them things work great!!!

From what I have read the factory alloys wont fit your truck, I'm not to sure what the problem is but there has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic. I would look into some more before shelling out $$$$

I have heard you have to take some stock off the outside of the drum. I would like to know were and how much. I don't want to weaken the drum. I have a Lathe big enough to do the job. I really dislike the steel wheels. They don’t hold the tolerance’s that a turn alloy wheel does,

Does anybody know how much and were the stock has to come off the drum before I buy a set of alloys?

thanks

I have 285s Cooper discoverys on mine for the past 4000 miles mounted on stock chrome rims. I must say they handle great, ride nice, do throw off the speedo, and so far work great in the snow. So far I have no complaints.

I'm on my second set of BFG AT (KO)'s and love them. This time around I also bought a set of wider wheels - American Racing "Baja" wheels - 16x8 and they work great. Only problem is some slight rubbing on the inner plastic fender (which I hate anyway - very poor design). I don't have problems with them wandering and they've always performed outstandingly in snow - I go up to Lake Tahoe quite a bit during the winter and have YET to need to add chains!

Dan, they fit the stock wheels with no problem at all, nothing needs to be done to the rotors or drums - they never rubbed against anything on my truck - if you look at my photo's you can see the half worn (1st ) set on it....
