BFG AT vs Cooper Discoverer STT
#16
I've had both, the BFG AT have what's called and inter-locking tread pattern, the post above where the guy got stuck on wet grass is exactly what happens. The tread fills with water and grass and you basically have a slick tire. Farmer buddy of mine had them on this 96, got stuck in pasture on a cow pie, had to put in in 4 wheel drive to get moving. They are a great tire on a 1/2 ton truck where the torque isn't as harsh. Cooper doesn't make the ST anymore, they changed to the STT, I called and called to get one of the first sets in Kansas. Great tire, but it's a very aggresive tread, it's going to wear fast. But hey, 50k miles out of a tire on a diesel truck, with the amount of torque it has, I think is pretty darn good. The ST was a harder rubber compound, road hard but lasted and cost a little less, it was a great tire. I vote for the Cooper. But wouldn't go any bigger then 285, they are wide and your asking for more $$ spent on front end parts with a bigger tire. Big tires look cool, but I'm getting 23 mpg on 265's. I don't know for a fact, but the guy's running 295 - 315's aren't getting that kind of mpg. I could be wrong...just ask my wife, she's never been wrong in her life.

I've never owned the BFG's but you couldn't give me another set of the Cooper STT's , mine are wearing horrible, they look good that's about it. My brother has the ST's and they are awesome, I think the Coopers are kind of hit and miss.

I would definitly get the 285/75/r16 M-55 toyos. They are 10 ply with a load rating of 3700 lbs. Dads got them on his 02, and I have a set 235/80/17 to go on my 06 when the time comes. Their great under heavy loads, mud, ice, gravel, but you can hear them whine a little on the highway when off the throttle, and wear like a otr truck tire.
---t, I should be a salemans for toyo

Go with the Coopers I tow alot and they do not wear that bad and less noise than the BFG's. This is the 13th set of tires on my truck and they seem to be the best yet. Just talking from exprience. 837,532km.

I think i'm going to try the m-55's in the 285/75/16 next time. Right now im rollin on those BFG things in a 295/75 and I know the stock rims are too skinny for that size but I run 'em low psi and although there's only 30% left, they are wearing out of round and that makes fer a rough ride!!
With that said, the last set were 265/75 BFG's and, man, I rode those to the threads ( then bought 2 more used and wore those to the threads) and didn't get the rough ride from that size so??
If I can get better traction and more milage out of the M-55's then i might have to give 'em a try.

i got my truck with bfgoodrich 285's and they suck in mud , not self cleaning, i would go with the coopers. after my tires are a little more worn and i get the money im just going with a mud terrain tire in 35's.

Both of my bros ran the BFG 285s and had almost 100k miles on theirs before changing out....yes, to the BFG again. Of course religious rotation and 55psi. I'm running the same now and w/the 55psi it does seem to bulge the centers. Going back to double check the alignment and maybe lower to 50psi. No, no on the Goodyear MTRs

I got the STT's 315/75/16 and had them on since last winter. they are great in the snow. in 4wd i have to try really really hard to get them to break lose. they are not noisy, well at least i cant even hear them at all over my stacks Personally i like them alot. just wish they would last more than 20k miles not that my right foot would have anything at all to do with that.

I'm running the STTs in 315/75/16 as well, no leveling kit needed. It'll rub but you still have over 3/4s of your turning before they rub on the control arms.
I was getting around 18-19 mpg with 265s mostly in-town driving with some highway, now its 14.5 to 16 mpg. But I have a heavy right foot and love hearing my stacks. If you've got 3.55s and 315s the 55 mph is where you'll see the best milage.
Oh and my Cooper dealers has alot of STs in stock and they tried to push those... but I think they are hideous looking tires.

1bad4x4, I beg to differ, 55mph is the best mpg for any cummins with any stock gear ratio and any normal tire. PS, I noticed not much negative difference going from 55 to 60, but around 65 mph, the mpg really starts to drop, for me almost 10% for every 10 mph above 60 mph.
