BFG AT vs Cooper Discoverer STT

Well guys, im stuck between these 2 tire choices. Heres a couple pros/cons of each

BFG AT:

Pros:
  • Available 295/75 for a little larger tire
  • 3700 lb 10 ply rating for 285/75
  • Fully warranted where i work for any problems
  • Dealer pricing at 181.00 a piece for 285/75 in a 10 ply

Cons:
  • Everybody and their brother runs them
  • not overly aggressive/tough looking
  • pay a lot for name

Cooper Discoverer STT

Pros:
  • Nice aggressive styling for our trucks
  • Similar tread pattern to Toyo MT
  • Beefy treaded sidewalls
  • Advanced Armor Tek 3 carcass

Cons:
  • Quicker wearing tread
  • only avail in D load range @ 3300 lbs on a 285/75 (265/75 load range E is only 3400 lbs)
  • Not as many size options
  • Louder on the road (not always a bad thing depending on driver)
  • Priced at 188.00 a piece with road hazard only on a 285/75

Please give me all your feedback on both tires and/or show me some other tires to look into. Would prefer pricing under 200 per tire and readily avail. tire as i need a set ASAP

BFG is a better tire, used to work at discount tire store, the mickey thompson tires are a good overall tire for the price as well

Those BF's should last twice as long. My cheap buckshots are toast at 29K miles. They do get great traction in the dirt and mud, poor on snow and ice, ok on wet pavement, great in the slush. Can be shipped to your door in 315 75 16 or 285 75 16 for less than 600 on ebay. With my skinny steel stock wheels, I should have gone with the 285's so I could run more than 35 psi. At 35-40 psi, the center bulged and i didn't want to wear out the middle. Pretty quite in my opinion, I could not hear them over the engine. I now went with Definity Dakotas in 285/75/16. Can be shipped to your door for under 500. I was told these will last closer to 40 or 50K. If you have a Pep Boys nearby, they may still have these on special for buy 3 get one free. Works out to less than 130/tire installed if they still have that deal going.

I want some of my lost mpg back, that is why I have downsized.

I have never run either, I have the Cooper S/T and have been quite happy.

A friend has the STT and has 45k on them, and they have maybe 10k left.

Do you really do much offroad?

I would only get the Coopers if you spend significant time off-road... Or the looks alone are really that important.

Why not consider these E-rated 285s?

They have a reputation for wearing like iron.

They are my next tires...

Coopers will wear bad because they have spaced and slotted outer lugs (horrible side wear and need to be rotated a lot)

The BFG's are a great tire, good mud, slush, snow and trailer pulling.

The ones posted right above my post (the Toyo's) are a good choice but when they get to around 50% the middle of the tire is bald when the outside lugs still have good tread...

just my 2 pennies (I worked for Les Schwabs and have installed all of these tires so I have first hand experience on gas and diesel trucks, and SUV's)

Go with the bfg's they are awesome tires, good looks, good wear. and have a good weight carrying capacity. Theres a reason everyone and thier dog has them and its not cuz they are cheap

I disagree with that statement.
IF you keep them properly balanced and inflated to what the manufacturers specs are,not your specs, then wear patterns are normal with the Coopers.I rotate my STT's every 2nd service(about 12-20k),rebalance them and retorque the wheels.Rear tires are rotated straight front(LR to LF/RR to RF) and the fronts are crossed(RF to LR/LF to RR) during rotation.I have about 30,000 on my STT's and they are about half worn out and still have a nice ride.I would reccomend them to anyone.

The BFG's are well known for their harsh ride as they wear. The more miles on them the harder they get and the slicker they get on wet roads.I have never had any luck with them and would not spend my money on them................Andy

Had a set of the BFG's and feel the same bout them as i do goodyear wrangler at's. Would never own them again. My issue with bfg's is got stuck in wet grass pullling boat outa back yard. They wouldnt clean out for anything. Have the coopers now with around 8k on them and really cant tell any miles on them and I drive a curvy mountain rd every day to work that eats up tires. Last tires were mickey thompson mtx and the only lasted 18k with rotating every 3 to 4k. Just my 2 cents.

I've got the STTs in 315s and my local tire place offered a road hazard on them. They aren't loud at all, I can only hear them when I'm completely off the go pedal and coasting to a stop. I've heard 30k out of them and I've heard mid 40k out of them, not really sure there as this is my first set of them. But they do hold up to burn outs pretty **** well... especially when two them I ended up sliding onto a metal grate(like at a car wash or grain elevator). They look more like MTRs the Toyos, but I do get compliments on them all the time now... and I think they are still way too small.

I think over all they're both good tires it just depends what your going to be doing... I don't tow, love to go play in the mud, hate having what everybody and their brother does, and don't give a rats **** about milage!

I have a set of Copper ST 285's on my truck. Love them. A little louder...but who cares when you drive a diesel. They worked great last winter. Better than my BFG 285's ever did. I'll never have another set of BFG A/T's on a diesel truck.

and DONT go with 295's go with the 285's

i went from 285 bfg at's to 295 hankook m/t's and have been dissapointed ever since.

the 295's rub in the front with my eagle 058's and i know i lost about 1.5mpg with them over the 285's, they are just enough bigger that at the speeds i drive (55mph typically that i'm at too low of an rpm in OD)

the bfgs are very quiet, good in snow rain slush. SUCK in the mud, if you want mud tires dont get the at's they turn into mud slicks in about 2ft.

my next tires will be 285's, and most likely bfg at's.... i got my hankook for $450 for all 4, so if i get 25-30k out of em i'm still doing ok. we'll see though, i've got about 13k on them now and i'd say i'm at about 1/2-2/3 tread left.

I got the AT's and I hate the way they wear all the treads get torn off and I rarely do any burnouts.
