this has been covered extensively in another thread.
end result was 97 was the best year made, 97 12v was the last of it's series and had all the bugs worked out.
98 12v 4dr 5sp, would be the candidate for best except for it's got 53 block issues.
so most desirable model would be 97 12v 4x4 w/ 5sp, unless you found a non 53 block 98 12v

I agree that 1997 seems to be the best of the 2nd Gen 12v trucks. First year of the hydroboost brakes, too.
I think I would just skip the 24v trucks in favor of a 3rd Gen if I wanted newer.

Plus 98 was the intro of the annoying A/C controls.
Best truck depends on usage. I have to have a 4x4, it my be a waste of effiency and hard to get into for others. I don't need a dually for my loads, but others have to have one...

I would have to agree with the others the say 97 or the early 98's if they have non-53 blocks and of course the usual 4x4 5spd club cab or quad for the rare 98 and the most important of all 12 VALVE CTD

I'm with you 12 valve backing guys...now that I've had both I'd trade my 24 valve off to have another 12 valve in a heartbeat...but I love the new interior of the 98...AND THE 4 DOORS!!! WOO HOO!!! ...haha, but my vote goes for the non 53 block 98 12 valve QC 4x4 5-speed...

I've read that the 1998 12v trucks had more problems than the other 12v trucks. Seems Cummins and Dodge more or less swept up the 12v assembly line and cobbled the leftovers together with a mix a newer parts while waiting for the ISB to debut.

the best in my opinion is the 98 QC non 53 4X4, I love the quad cab and you cant beat a 12v.

I thought it was a Y2K, cuz I have one, ha!
But what about things like disc brakes, or common rail stuff. Don't the 97's have a 46rh? What about the nicer interiors?
Are you picking just for reliability and bombing ability?

1998 24v 4/4 quad cab 4x4 (5 speed)
My truck w/ a stick....wouldn't get any better. It has the "upgraded" interior, and it's a really easy truck to add power through a box. 1st year you could do that! Although, a case is definetly made for the 1998 12v quad cab 4x4 5 speed because of reliability....oh no, should I sell mine and buy that? Nah.....keep what I have, but if I was looking for a 2nd CTD.....

I would agree for 12v trucks the 97 or 98 trucks would be the best but if you wanted a 24v truck I'd say 2001.5 or 2002. You get the rear disc brakes with them, no 53 block to my knowledge, and no KDP. But in trade you get the VP44 and its issues. No matter what year you get they all have some problems but all can be fixed. Another reason I like the 2002 is it's the last year dodge made the 2nd gen body style and the best looking body style in my opinion.
