Best Tuner/box for Fuel Mileage and Towing power?

I am not "up" on the new tuner/boxes. Last I was looking at the Quad ZXL+ and the Deablo power puck.

Whats the best working for mileage and low end power for pulling a 5th wheel

Im on a budget so best for the buck

There is the TS MVP....No wire tap box..In Diesel Power they did a dyno run with 67hp and 161 Tq. Supposed to add around 1.5mpg..

From what I have learned, all the boxes that "don't" tap the wire will add a max of roughly 65hp. It's the other "features" such as adj on the fly, interchangable "tunes/programs" that "add" to the list of one product over another. After my research, I purchased the Quad XZT+ for the reasons listed above and the customer service.

forgive my ignorance. Other than paying alot more for some, there is no difference unless tapped, other than more timing variance? Its when you tap it, it gets fun and the extra control is very beneficial. If someone is not going to tap the wire then get something cheap, right? You can only advance timing so much. Most take advantage of timing. Why pay more?

Edge EZ is nice. 3 levels to choose from. I think one of the best low end power adders for pulling a fifth wheel is a VanAaken V5. Look around, and you can find them for under a hundred bucks.

Low end i still think the smarty has the strongest lowend just not much on the top end. If you have a manual transmission it is nice because it makes it so much more fun to drive by reducing turbo lag.

A couple years ago I heard the VanAkin was smoother than the EZ, but they are out of busines. The EZ seems too high priced. Smarty would be neat but high price. The Quad ZXL+ seems like it might be a good deal with its features, but not sure of its actual true performance or lack of. Havent heard about the TS MVP

I've got an edge mileage max and have had good luck with it. Only an extra 35 hp and 77 ft pounds, but it made a nice difference, especially with my stock slushbox automatic...

I payed 150 for a used EZ. I have two years with no problems and approx 60hp. You should be able to get one for 200 used.

I came to the 2nd Gen section looking for anwers to the same questions for a friend of mine. I'll keep an eye on this thread as I have no idea of what to do to a 2nd gen truck to get a little more oomph for pulling.

I have a XZT+ and it does just what I was looking for. It is easy to change the programs and has a fuel saver ( only got about 1 MPG more ) and has a 65 HP 200 FT on the high side. Lets you add fast idle and all kinds of stuff. I was just out to the site and they have some Beta downloads and they say more aggressive but who knows. Pulling my 5er in the power setting the turbo spools up quicker and that is like smashing down on an old 4 barrel on my GTO. You can feel it in the seat of your pants. Got 9.8 MPG last tow fighting a head wind and 10.9 over the Rockies and back. Both in fuel mode. So far I am happy with what I got for the dollar.

After driving with my tapped Juice with Attitude I have unofficially found that I can get about 6 more mpg on 5x4 driving at 65mph. I was seeing 20-21 on the overhead console (which is optimistic by about 2mpg) and now see an easy 25-26 with an occasional 28mpg. Average used to be 19ish on the overhead and now is almost 25 on my 330 mile level round trip. We'll see after the next fillup (this one won't count since I was doing smoky burnouts every other stoplight). I tried all the settings from 1x1 through 5x5 while having the cruise control on 65moh and, while 5x5 gives the best mileage it is like sitting on a pulsejet. On. Off. On. Off. Max power. Idle. Max. Idle. Great mileage but nerve wracking. That was also stacked with my Superchips 3705 tuner on max performance. I'll run the next trip with just stock and the Juice. Now if only I could get my turbo timer to work....

Is that hand calculated or the overhead?

Right now, only the difference on the overhead. I have to run another tankfull to get hand calculated mpg's since I blew half a tank out the exhaust playing with all the newfound power. I usually get about 16.8 mpg with about 50-80 miles of city driving and 330 miles round trip highway time. All city driving is about 16 and all highway is about 19 with the old setup (Superchips 3705 set on HI-Perf). I was just amazed with the change on the overhead. I'll keep this updated after the next trip when I can get a real hand calculated mpg rating on 5x4 with the Juice. If what I'm seeing is true I should be able to eke out another 100+ miles per tank and the Juice w/ Attitude will pay for itself in about 4-5 months....

As for cumalong: You're right. If you have no desire to tap the pump you will only see 60-85+ hp and minimal gains on mpgs (1-2mpg) I think. I didn't really want to tap the pump, but I have to say, it may be worth a new VP just to have this kind of oomph! Amazing!
