Best single turbo for 400 HP and quick spool

Ok, here is the scoop. I HATE HATE HATE (did I say HATE) lag. I am going to get some Mach 2+'s and look in my sig for the rest of the mods. Yes I know, I will need a clutch. Dont worry about that. My question is, what turbo do you guys recommend, for the absolute best street spoolup possible and about 40# of boost with these mods. I will be either fabricating a custom exhaust manifold or getting the three piece. In both cases though, the manifold will be jet hot coated and insulated as will the turbine exhaust housing, both of which will help spoolup.

So what do u think about the best single turbo... OR shout I just go for it and build a small set of twins???

Please any and all recomendations...

Thanks
Zino

Zino, at this hp point I think twins would be a waste of money.

The turbo you seek is a ksb1b Lightning, AKA KSB1-2

This is a B1 turbo with a smaller turbine wheel and a tighter turbine housing. Spoolup is said to be between the stock HY35-9 on autos and a stock HX35-12 on the stick trucks. That is to say, VERY quick spoolup.

The turbo will also have enough air (thanks to the B1 compressor side) to cool 425hp comfortably.

It's a fantastic turbo for trucks that aren't too aggressively fueled. It DOES trade some top end pull and cooling for spoolup, so it won't give you that big hit that other B1s give you.

Unfortunately, it's expensive. I think it's $1600. Not cheap, but they're built like tanks and you don't hear of them blowing. Only one has blown that I know of, and it was making over 60psi on nitrous

Another turbo that's HIGHLY respected is the Bell USB from Pius Eberle. He is one of the single most respected turbo gurus around. He builds these CTD turbos on the side. The USB is hard to find info on, best I can tell it spools really well and will cool up to 520hp! It's very efficient. It's also even more expensive at $1750 or so.

With PDR's turbos, your kinda in the middle at 400hp. A PDR35 will be out of breath with 400hp, but a PDR40 will be a little laggy as they spool better with 450hp worth of fuel or so. The PDR turbos are good deals (PDR40 is about $1100), but the PDR40 isn't as tough as a B1. A Stock 40 is known to be fragile, but PDR mods seem to help them hold up. That said, I know someone who has blown two of Piers' 40s, so they're not superduty like the B1s.

JR Adkins has some good turbos, but his are made more for bigger hp than you are looking for, so they'd be real laggy for you.

The best all-around compromise for you would probably be the Dodgezilla hybrid. It's an HX35/HX40 hybrid. It will cool up to 420hp or so. It uses the compressor of an HX40 and mates it to the turbine of an HX35. It's not as tough as the B1, and I think the B1 is a little faster spooling, but the DZ is also quite a bit less $$ at around $800.

I only have firsthand experience with my stock turbo, so the above is just what I gathered from a crazy amount of time here and on TDR.

I got a htt stage 3 and it works real good. Had it on my 01 HO with 2.5 edm's and ez. Spool up was great! This is not a 400 horse combo but it would clear up the smoke on a 70 degree day. Put it on the 97 last week and it really brought it to life too. For the price of it and machine work on the cartright it is a good buy.The difference in it and a stock turbo is night and day.

Two more turbos to consider, the new Dodgezilla 40, and S3000 (?) from BD.

A NW Bomber member went with the USB and had a tough time getting it dialed in. It barks real easy and last I knew never was able to eliminate it.

I drove a 12-valve with EDM 3s and PDR40 and it spooled great. Right now it's my #1 pick when I turbo my 12-valve

He does. The only ones listed on the site, are bigger than the 370 Bosch injectors.
