Best location for muffler?

I've got 2 pieces of straight pipe for my new 4" exhaust. Should the muffler go in before the tailpipe or in between the 2 straight pieces? Which of the 2 cans that were on the stock exhaust was the muffler, big or little? Should the new muffler be near the stock position?

The further back on the system you can get it to the tailpipe.

I run a resonator 5" then a long muffler then the tailpipe. Works great! low egts and not too loud for talking on the cell phone. I need it to work in all day. NOt just drive me to work if you know what I mean.

By the way it's a 99' model. I don't have one of those new fangled quiet diesels.

After having messed with mine and some other guys lately it weems like you have the down pipe, a straight piece, a piece you cut to length as per the particular truck length, muffler, straight piece, over the axle piece then the tail pipe.

As far as muffler location the further back in the system you put it the quieter you should end up because the longer the pipe in front of it the more it will absorb some of the sound before it enters the muffler. Will you actually hear much of a difference with the human ear i doubt it .

Dogfish the little one is the resonator as for what you are doing now put the tailpipe in its proper location put the muffler in next and then connect it up to the downpipe off of the turbo. This should give you lots of clearance to work with and no rattles when you are done.

SilverRam the correct location for a resonator is AFTER the muffler.
Then why is the resonator before the muffler when they came from the factory?? Sorry, but I believe that is wrong, the resonator is first. I'm sure others would agree.
