BD Super B review (so far)

The reason I say so far is because when I picked up the truck after installation of a few mods it was raining cats & dogs and today we got 3 " of snow so I've had no chance to get her up to full boost in fear of loosing the *** end. So here's the goods, I had a straight 5" (from straight 4"), ATS 3 piece manifold (from stock of course) and Super B (from HY35) installed and y'all might not believe this but the Super B actually spools faster than the HY, especially factoring in that I went to a bigger exhaust, crazy huh? I wonder if the manifold made that much of a difference? I was also making about double the boost at the same throttle and the power increase was **** nice. All in all I absolutely love this turbo, great spool, sounds awesome and cools pretty good but I can't really tell yet as I only had her to 28 lbs. so far, can't wait to see how close to 40 she'll get! One last thing, Pat at BD is the real deal, I picked his brain on the forum here quite a bit and his responses were instant he really helped me out even though I had already bought the turbo elsewhere, great guy, thanks again Pat!

Thats good to hear. I also like my Super B Special, it works great and was half the price of others.

Update: There's good & bad news, good first: holy $hit this thing gets up & goes now, honestly feels like I picked up an easy 100hp, I have the Juice boost alert set to 40 and I'll tell y'all one thing, I'm sick & tired of that beeping, it goes off all too easily. I also have the Juice fuel cut off set at 40 lbs. I wonder what she would max out at, any guesses? Bad news: the factory intercooler boots told me to go "f" myself after 3 40 lb. runs, looks like BD is getting some more of my money . Anyone know what BD's boots are rated at? Also should I be worried about 40 lbs. of boost as far as head gasket is concerned? Time for studs?

I bought a set of BD boots & blew a 3" hole out the side of the 45* boot, only running 45psi boost. I spoke with a few other guys who had the same result, looked identical to mine. I installed a factory boot using BD clamps & it lasted all season sled pulling. I've since ordered some PDR boots & they are twice as thick. Haven't had a problem in a year of running them at over 50psi [56psi since the M5's were installed].

Ya know, I sure wish I was smart enough to do a search before ordering. I just read quite a few pages and really like your spring-delete setup. Insult to injury would be paying $225 for BD rated at 75 psi and then seeing Stylin motors rated at 110 psi for $165. Man I really need to make an attempt at being less impulsive with the Visa... So ya say 100 inch/lbs huh?

Wasn't that you that got rid of the springs on the clamps and installed spacers and said to torque them to about 100 inch/lbs.? Might have been someone else? If so, my bad..

Wasn't me. You would be surprised how much boost you can put to stock boots. Good clamps make all the difference.

Stock intercooler boots should handle 40psi no problem.

Probably not as fast as HY-35, but close. You changed more than one thing at a time so hard to evaluate the difference.
But, The BD Super B is an exceptional turbo.... and a big step op from factory. I have one for a secondary turbo and love it!
You'll have egt problems at WOT, with your fueling, but just keep it in the red arch for no more than 8-10 sec. and you'll be ok! Enjoy

I couldn't agree more about the Super B, I'm absolutely blown away with what a difference it has made but to tell ya the truth I'm not really worried about EGT's. My concern now is the head gasket and making too much boost. I'm not kiddin' y'all here about how easy it is to hit 40 psi, I'm now thinking about the ARP studs but I do have a question: are the $425 ones rated at 220,000 psi enough for say 45-50 psi boost or do I have to get all high falootin' & buy the $1,100 ones rated at 270,000 psi? Again, about the EGT's, I have the Juice EGT alarm set at 1350 and I don't recall hitting it that much at all as of yet and that's with the Juice on HOT all the time.

220,000psi 12mm are fine. Thats what most guys run, the 270,000 are 14mm studs. Stock bolts are 12mm.
