i think cutting and welding is the only way to do it right. you can cut and put a piece of pipe in there and connect with the aluminum type clamps but won't be real strong.

I was thinking more like having it flared like the pipes come out of the box

I had the monster exhaust. I cut it out and welded a piece in it's place because none of the local shops had a pipe stretcher that would do 4"ID. You may check your local big truck supply stores and see if the have a 4"ID coupler that is long enough. Can't see why you wouldn't want to weld a piece in place though?

I just think if I don't like it with out the muffler, I can take out the pipe and put it back.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you'll find. I noticed a difference in the way the truck breathed the second I hit the key. It is going to drone on you a little at highway speeds but with the resonance of the 5'tip and where the exhaust exits it's really not that noticable inside the cab. Even if you aren't impressed it would only take you a couple of minutes more to cut the pipe back out and re-weld the muffler into place. Just make sure you make a nice clean cut the first time! I used a saws-all on mine as opposed to a torch or plasma cutter.

These clamps (scroll to the bottom) are about the best thing I have used.

There ya go!!!
Only thing is if you use 4"ID flex pipe you are going to need a differnt type of band clamp. They have specific clamps just for flex pipe. Any truck parts shop should carry these.
