Try replacing the IAT sensor. It's in the cyl head reading intake air temps.

When this goes bad, it causes the computer to back off timing and kills MPG.

Is the IAT sensor on the drivers side? and if so is it the one just past the map sensor toward the firewall? Also is there only one IAT ?

Yes, that's the sensor-- just past the MAP sensor toward the firewall, right near the rear lifting eye bracket.

Terry, one thing you failed to mention is how any miles on the engine, auto or manual trans.
I am told that the valves will need to be adjusted at each 100K.
That small task has been known to increase your fuel mileage.

Terry,
Figures.... I move and THEN find someone else on DTR that lives in Russellville??... good luck with your IAT... I replaced mine two years ago just because...

The worst was the crank position sensor... I had to take it to Valley Motors to get it removed and that was after 3 days of doing everything I could think of to pull it!!

my truck is a 2001 ram2500 4x4 with auto trans and 170,000 miles.
Not sure if it has ever had the valves adjusted. When i purchased the truck it 150,000 and came from a pipeline company.

I'd adjust them anyway...won't hurt anything and you know its done. Do a search and you can find the recommended tolerances. Its pretty easy to do and you might as well throw some injectors in there while you have the valve cover off...at least that was my excuse and the wifey bought it!
