Wow,.....this thread has definitely gotten a little "hot" since
I was in here last night!! Sorry I created such an "uproar!"
Let me try to address/answer some of this discussion:
AlpineRAM:
Sorry I wasn't in here to answer your questions earlier.
I have to work sometimes!
Alpine, I ran both the B-1's (KS and regular housing) about
a year and a half ago. The problems I had were real and the
"stalling" or "skipping" I mentioned was bad with the KS B-1,
pretty much as I described in my post last night. You asked
about the "set-up" on our trucks at the time. My "signature"
will give you what the 96' 12 valve had and my son's 2001
24 valve had: TST PM 3 (Comp) piggybacked with an Edge
EZ, DD SuperMental Injectors, Scotty II Air, ATS Auto Trans.
Alpine, his 01' dynoed at 497 RWHP so it should of had the
fuel and power to "spool" the B-1.
Hope this helps some!
-------------
DarrellB:
When I posted to you last night, it was only to remind you
that I had problems with them and don't want to see you
be unhappy with yours!! As you said, you had ridden in
my truck so I knew you had some idea of how bad the
lag was. If Ken has gotten that "fixed" now,....GREAT!!
But,......as I said in my first post, while at the ATS Rally
in Denver last year (about 8 months ago) two diesel
owners (one with a K-45 on a 2003 CR and a B-1 KS
on a 2002 24 valve) both owners were complaining
about the "stalling" (K-45 owner and B-1 KS owner)
and the B-1 owner about the "barking." Also Darrell,
thank you for confirming to the members here that
what I said about the B-1's on my truck were accurate!
I don't want to see you drop $1,600.00 and have a turbo
you are unhappy with!! As I think I said,....try before you
buy" or drive a similar truck with the B-1. Heck Darrell, if
I had one similar you could drive mine!!
--------------
hellotbone:
Let me start off by saying that my experiences with BOTH
B-1's were real and accurate regardless of what you think
of my motives! And FYI,......I do not have a "set paragraph"
with the B-1 facts to criticize them each time I see a post
on it. That is ridiculous! When I did post about them
I said exactly what my experiences were, no more, no less!!
There have been several times when I would see a B-1 post
and said nothing exactly for the reason you mentioned in this
thread!!
You said in your post that "it seems as though John_P is the
only guy that ever had problems with the B-1." Well my son
(banshee) told you what happened on his 01' 24 valve and
then you make the remark about our relationship! Why?
I know of three (3) others that have also had problems
but they are mainly on the TDR. If you want to know who
they are I would be glad to tell you, just send me a PM!
And the problems they had were more serious than you
would probably believe! "DarrellB" is a friend of mine and
I posted to remind him of the problems I had, as he had
ridden in the truck and posted as much. I do not want
to see "DarrellB" spend that kind of money and be
unhappy with the turbo!! "J.R. Adkins" also rode in my
96' 12 valve with that B-1 "tbone" and he will tell you the
exact same thing that Darrell did!! You said you liked
your B-1 and that the EGT's were lower than with your
HX-40. Well, on my 96' the EGT's were almost identical!!
Towing with the KS B-1 the EGT's were actually higher!
What about H.P.??? Kurt Yardley personally told me I
would see 40-50 more RWHP than I had with my stock
HX-35/12. Well, on a Mustang Dyno it was actually 35RWHP!
The Piers HX-40/16 was 27 RWHP over the stock HX-35/12.
You may be right,.........maybe I was using "old technology!"
The shame of that is,.......that "old technology" cost me
over $3,500.00!!! At the time they came out everyone I
spoke with said the B-1's were the "new technology" so
"shame on me for that!" I just don't want "DarrellB" to
make a mistake he is going to regret! Everyone assures
me that Ken has changed or "addressed" the "problems"
associated with the B-1. If that is the case, GREAT!! But,
I still speak with owners (see above) who report the
"stalling" or barking" problems.
You like your B-1,.....that is GREAT "tbone!" My experience
has been much different than yours and I have the data and
actual people to back up what I have said on this website!!
You may not like it, but that is the way it is. IMO, there is no
need for the sarcastic remarks about someone elses opinion
on a thread here! "Push Rod" and myself have had some
very "good spirited" discussions about the B-1's, however,
we have always kept it "civil" "tbone!" All of the members on
this site benefit in a "discussion" like this. So,......lets try to
get along here!

Don, Rod and Merrick:
Like HOHN I want to also "thank you" for your excellent
input on this thread and the many others you add to on
a daily basis!

Keeping with the thread here, no sooner than I made my last post who happens to show up at my door? "No not Top telling me I was the instigator of this maylay." But one J.R., (scary hu, I didn't even know he was coming by) but I talked with J.R. for a bit about chargers and I think it's going to end up costing me a lot of $$$$$$ in the long run.
Thanks for the info and clearing thinks up John-P, maybe I will see ya at the Claremont Ralley later this year.

John_P: Thanks for the info. I wasn't shure whether your sig reflected the gadgets you had on your truck while testing. Did this skipping take place under light loads and low boost or was this at a certain point in rpm- or all over the road?
The reason I ask for this is because I'm on a completely different avenue with my turbo. And to learn about other people's problems may save me some time and money, and give me the liberty to make my own creative design errors.

Alpine:
You are welcome on the response!
Alpine, the B-1 (Regular housing) did not have the "skipping"
while towing or running "bobtail." At the time, I had spoke
with Kurt about the "lag" problem on that RHB-1 and he
suggested I try the KSB-1. He assured me that the "lag"
problem would be "much better" with the KS model but
did say that the EGT's would probably be higher. Wanting
to believe what he said, I decided to buy the KS-B1.
Well, the "lag" was very slightly better, but, then that
"skipping" showed up! It would occur as I towed
trailers on straight, level ground with the RPMS
1600-1800. If the road was smooth, there was no
problem, but as I had said in my first post, if you
encountered a section of bumpy roads/Interstate
with the familiar "whoops" section (small rise in the
road/shallow area/small rise etc.) and you "blipped"
or accidentally tapped the throttle, that is when the
"skipping" would start! If you just kept "constant"
pressure on the accelerator this "skipping" would
get progressively worse until the truck would begin
to "shudder",......much the same as an automatic
transmission "shudder" if you have ever felt that.
Now if you "accelerated through" the skipping, it
would stop or if you let off the throttle it would
stop. However, in some cases (traffic, merging lane
areas etc.) I could not just "let off" or "accelerate
through" the "skipping" so you can see the problem
I think! It was a very annoying characteristic to say
the least and it really surprised me that the turbo
was doing it. At the time, I called Kurt about it and
his "explanation" was "the tight tolerances and MAP
set-up of the turbo was probably causing it!"
I hope this has helped you some Alpine! I have
tried to explain it as best I could!

You never see a thread like this over grills cuz we all know the George Foreman Grill is best.
I got an email from George, he suggested y'all should take up boxing and decide that way, then get in line for him as everyone thinks they can beat the old man.
No canes allowed Top.
The visual of Rod in a cheerleading outfit was not what I needed first thing in the morning.

John: Was the problem all the same on the 12V and the 24V? I think I see what your problem was (not the cause). At what boost did this turbo develop this annoying habit? Or was it all the same through the full boost range?
I'm using a VG turbo now that's really nice. Still lots of bugs to get out of the regulating circuits, but rather good spoolup (about 1 second from the redlight to 30psi when I mash the pedal) and nice EGTs at WOT. Still got some surging and barking issues though.
Thanks for the info!

On the other hand you wont get that little stock wheel to supply enough air for adding too much power over stock without running into EGT troubles.

Alpine:
You asked whether the "skipping" or "surging" problem
was the "same" on the 96' 12 valve and the 01' 24 valve.
Yes it was similar, but it seemed worse with my 96',.....
why exactly I don't really know.
The boost level during the "surging" varied, as I was
at different speeds when it would happen Alpine. It
could be as low as 12-15lbs. or as high as 20-22lbs.
As I had said earlier, it usually would happen at a
"constant speed, on straight, level roads and after
I would "tap" the throttle on a series of bumps or
"whoops."
The VG Turbo you are using sounds interesting! I
know that Ford is putting them on the new 6.0 PSD's
now. I have driven one and they are very responsive!
Maybe that is going to be the "new technology" huh??

Thanks John!
I do really like the VGT stuff as long as it's working. We're working on the glitches the system still has, but my problems are very low boost driveability (you can get it to surge in city driving) and some security against overspeeding.
Over here we've got quite a "Diesel culture" so VGT aren't that rare. I keep thinking about doing a completely different set of "twins" by going parallel with 2 chargers from smaller engines... BMW4.0 diesel comes to my mind. So many ideas left at the end of money

I have a twin turbo question for anyone in the know.
Do you have to have to pull the engine to have it fire ringed? and how long does it usually take someone to do the fire ringing?
Thanks
