auto tranny mystery switch
I want to be able to control the lockup of my converter. I know there is a way to wire a switch in that will keep the tranny from locking up when needed. How is this accomplished?

I added a switch to my '97, but it was TO lock up the converter, not to keep it from locking up....are you sure you want to keep it OUT of lock up ???

Boy, my '97 didn't accellerate for cra* unless the convertor was locked - I locked that sucker up as soon as I got rolling and then it really took off - very strange that you would want to unlock the convertor to pass....anyhow.... to add the switch to make it lock up you have to tap into a wire under the hood on the passenger side and put a switch in that connects it to ground. I don't recall the wire number, but I found great directions on the whole thing in a turo-diesel register mag a couple of years ago. Sorry I can't give you specific details - just don't remember exactly...but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

here you go buddy. I went the extra mile and put a relay inline with this wire hooked up to my brake light wire so that If I forgot to turn it off it wouldn't shudder all crazy. anyway, heres the site: http://www.tstproducts.com/tranny_install.html

That looks familliar...maybe thats where I got the info :

Brake light tap into a relay...now that's a good idea, I about shook my '97 into pieces several times...I would highly recommend lance's idea if you are going to do the lock up switch.

right now (w/o the 370 installed yet) i should be at about 300hp/715tq. upped line pressures and a converter UNlock/stock switch keep everything together. forcing lockup is good for acceleration, however, it can easily be overpowered. slipping the lock up clutch in a constant manner will lead to quick transmission failure.

Tom

With just an EZ I could slip the lockup clutch in the 1600-1900 rpm range. Just be warned that using a mystery switch for lockup can cause you to need a TC sooner than you think.
