ATTN: DSS owners

Quick question.

What size socket is needed to both remove the original pitman nut and install the new DSS pitman nut?
Are they the same size?

Did a quick search and didn't see anyone posting the size.

I don't appear to have one big enough, and want to make sure I get the right size.
Also, is a deep socket deep enough?

Want to make sure I get it torqued to the right specs, and don't want to deal with the crazy algebra needed to figure the torque if I have to use a crows foot or something like that.

Want to get it installed today while there is a break in the storms.
Have to do it in the driveway since my garage door isn't 7 feet tall.

OK I went outside and measured mine. The original nut was 1.305" or about 1-5/16". The one on the DSS was about 1.275" (kind of hard to measure on the truck) which is also "close" to 1-5/16" just a little undersize. If I remember correctly I think you could do it with a regular socket not even deep (To take off the original) . I didn't have the right size socket either so I used a BIG pair of channel lock pliers but a BIG adjustable would also work!

Took me about 20 minutes to do start to finish , in the driveway with a meager set of tools. No problems!

Hope that helps!

Channel locks for the original nut it is.

I'll just take the new nut with me to Sears.

Phox,

Based on what I've seen at the TDR web site, you need a 1 & 5/16ths shallow to remove the existing nut and a 1 & 1/4 deep for the DSS replacement nut. I recently priced those two sockets at my local Snap On dealer and for the chrome versions, the 1 & 5/16ths is $42.25 and the 1 & 1/4 deep is $45.95. Both are 1/2" drive 6 point. You might be able to get them at Sears but I prefer Snap On since I usually can't find what I want at Sears.

Phox, billmac is right. I just put my DSS on last week, (got it from RIP), and I used a 1 & 5/16" shallow 6 point impact to remove the old nut. It was alittle sloppy I think it is 32mm, but the 6 point worked fine. Then a 1 & 1/4 deep to torque the new DSS nut on. I noticed an improvement, the truck didn't wander as bad, and I didn't have to herd it down the road as usuall.

Took the nut to Sears and yup, 1 1/4" it was.
They had a shallow one, but no deep one.

Dropped by Autozone and biggest they had was 1 1/8" deep.
Guy there sugested Sears, Harbor Freight, or the SnapOn truck.

If the socket is that much, I think I'll just strongarm it, since I doubt I'll ever need that size again.

Thanx for all the responses.

It's probably a little late, but if you folks have Menards stores down there, just pick up a 3/4" socket set. It only costs 40 bucks and comes with I think 16 or 17 sockets, 7/8" up to 2", a ratchet, extensions and a breaker bar. I was surprised how much I use mine, I thought I would only need it for the spindle nuts, but I've used it at least every couple of weeks on other things.

Never heard of Menards, so we must not have them.

I'll check out Harbor Freight tomorrow, if they have it, it'll be cheap.
If not, hopefully the weather lets me install it tomorow.

I never used a socket... I just did it with hand wrenches..

I think the original Pitman nut was Metric, but I can't recall off hand. I will have to go and pull it out of the bolt bin..

Since you won't be using the original nut again, you could use a pipewrench if you are really stuck. Mine wasn't that hard to pull off.

1 1/4 wrench and I had it on. Doubled the wrench just to make sure it was snug..

Today came and went way to fast.

Helped Dad move into his new house this morning,
daughters Gymnastics fun-meet this afternoon,
The Incredibles after that,
now it's dark and almost bedtime.

DSS will have to wait till next weekend now.

I bought a 1 1/4" deep impact socket off EBAY for $1.99 since I couldn't find one around town. Bought the 1 5/16" regular at Sears for $13.99.

Phox,
thanks for the thread. I will delete mine in the 2nd Gen No driveline.

I think that the replacement nut IS 32mm but I will take which ever I can get!

Thought that post looked familiar

I don't want to do anything to mine till I'm sure I don't need the truck for a couple hours, just in case.
Thursday is looking best so far.

Then a nice long drive to test it out.
