Anyone try and get their Carter 4601 into hush mode?

Anyone try and get their Carter 4601 into hush mode?
That thing isnt louder than the engine on an 03 but it is a legitimate competitor. Anyone tried to wrap it with some sound deadening material? Im guessing it would overheat but Im also guessing someone knows cause they already tried it? Any other tricks to quiet it down? What about some material in or under the floor of the cabin? Thanks

Crabman, The first time I mounted the (P4600HP 7 psi, P4601HP 15 psi) it was very loud. When it went out on me the 2nd time I switched the front pump mounting screws to the ones that came with the pump and drilled out the stock mounting plate to fit the rubber grouments. That is how to get it into hush mode. Mine is as quiet as ever. Should I ask did you do this? OverFueled

The 4601 mounts at the top and hangs off an L shaped bracket. I already have it mounted in the grommets enclosed with the kit. Are you saying you drilled out the bracket for the bracket to frame bolts and put grommets in there as well as the pump to bracket grommets? Thanks

Crabman, if the P4600HP or, P4601HP is still very loud. Then lets go through this in a step process. First of all, Is it mounted to the frame, floor or engin? Then the idea you made about the rubber between the other side of the frame is a good one. And no I did not have to do this. But this does bring up another question are your fuel gages mechanical or electrical? This would make a big difference before we go any further. OverFueled

My Carter was still too loud even when it was suspended only by the rubber lines at each end, dangling out in space!

Thankfully, once started, it usually can't be heard above the noise of the Cummins (another reason to love the older Cummins! ) That was before I installed a separate relay keyed off the stock LP so the added pusher only runs momentarily before the engine is started... I isolated the Carter mounts as much as practical, and that's about it - having a slight hearing disability and a loud Cummins DOES have it's rewards...

First of all I you have to address what loud is? Im guessing on a second or first gen truck the pump noise would hardly be noticable. On mine, because its so quiet at idle you can really hear it then and also at low speed/revs around town. It fades into the background out on the open road or when going through the gears. I have it mounted to the frame just aft of the tranny. Yesterday I drilled out the bracket and added grommets to the bracket to frame connection and it made zero difference. I have an electrical, the sender is mounted off a tee inbetween the fuel filter and the cp3.

Crabman, I ment electrical gage, not electrical lift pump is that how you took it? Because if the gage is mechanical then there are things we could do. But if the gage is electrical, Well in that case, I would have to agree with gary all the way, and say. That's all you are going to get on an 03. OverFueled

Yea, I meant the gauge was electrical with the sender plumbed in on a tee inbetween the filter and the cp3 sorry for not being more clear on that. I figured Im going to have to look at sound deadening but Im thinking wrapping the pump itself cant be good. I thought somebody might have already tried it but I wasnt really considering the fact that it wouldnt be so noticable on the previous trucks. I talked to Diesel Dynamics about it and they said they hadnt tried anything themselves in regards to pump noise. They also said I was the first to bring up a complaint on the noise. Since there are only 20 of their kits out and Im guessing the lions share of those went to people who were going well up the hp hill where noise is secondary to their goal it probably isnt nearly as much of a factor as someone like me who is trying to get maximum hp but without any tradeoffs in terms of towing, noise, driveablility etc.

Just curious why you went to the pusher, are you having fuel pressure problems? I got the PSI part of my monitor hooked up finally and it is about 8 at idle, 7 cruising and is hard to get below 4. But I haven't pulled anything since I got it hooked up either.

Without the ez I ran 10 to 12 at idle with a low of 6.2 at max flog. With the ez I had the same at idle but could pull it down to zero max flog. Im going to be doing my injectors and turbo soon so things wernt going to get any better. Rod told me (his 03 was pulling to zero also)he stalled his engine on the freeway doing a top end run when running at zero psi. And I watched a local fellow up here with DD3's/turbo etc go from not quite being able to get over 400 to 431 hp with nothing but adding a pusher. Same dyno and operator and within a few days. My own experiance? I pulled a max of 34.5 boost before installing the pusher and 37 afterwards. I dont think that extra boost is helping anything right now but Im pretty convinced these trucks are starving for fuel with only light mods. I have heard the arguement that the truck doesnt need one since the duramax doesnt have one but as I see this stuff with my own eyes that just doesnt hold water IMO. As an aside that fellow with the DD3's and DDs new turbo let me get behind the wheel at a bomb party on saturday and that was very impressive. No lag, pulls hard right off the bottom and just keeps pulling harder right past redline. It was also easier to go throught the gears since it doesnt hold up the rpm like the stock turbo. Made the truck much more driveable in normal everyday non flog driving.
