We ran a simple 30 amp relay on Dad`s 02 tiggered by the stock wiring. He hasn`t had a hard starting issue yet that I`m aware of. It doesn`t really get that cold here in TN, so that could be the differance.

I've started the truck from 10 degrees to 50 degrees and no diffrence in starting. I'm using a relay and while cranking I see about 5 psi. The draw is so great on the starter it limits the voltage to the pump.

"When I turn the key to on it pulses the pump to prime the system like the stock one and then shuts off during cranking. Once it's cranked it runs at full speed."

On second gens the ECM sends a lower voltage to the pump via Pulse Width Modulation during startup.

HOWEVER, when you connect a relay and use the lift pump wires to activate the coil, that no longer happens. Relays are either on or off. They don't operate fast enough to PWM the new fuel pump. Your pump is probably fully on during start up.
