Any interest in Flamethrowers (exhaust ignitors)?
My buddies and I are building Rat Rods (non-chrome, non-billet, primered hot rods) and have started looking into exhaust ignitors (flamethrowers) for them.

I was thinking that big flames coming out of a Cummins powered Dodge would also look pretty cool (not on the street, of course).

We've engineered some inexpensive ignitors, and I'm also investigating a way to get gas into my exhaust so I can ignite it. My friends with carburated cars just have a switch that kills the ignition and starts a spark at the end of the pipe. Goooood flames!

Is it worth my time to try and build something for the guys here? I'm guessing it would cost $50 or so, and require a handful of junkyard parts (coil, spark plug...) and the time to install it on your rig.

Tackett
- I really want to see 5" chrome stacks with big flames!

Mainly what you're painting them with. Also for the exhaust flame throwers, find a way to plumb in propane, as the newer cars don't let enough fumes to just put a coil and spark plus near the exhaust tip to ignite anything.....

I got the stacks...figure out how to get the flames out the top without external wiring and I'll do it. I'm setting up my pics page today so Ill have more shots of the stacks shortly.

Paint (on the rat rods) is not a priority and it'll most likely be flat black primer from a can.

We're looking at both propane and gas for the guys with diesel or electronic ignitions.

We torture tested the ignitors the other night. It ran for 10 hours (connected to a coil and spark plug) straight, and the electronics didn't get hot. It was still throwing a fat spark 10 hours later. With luck, I'll have pictures (or video) of them on a '62 Caddy with side pipes next week.

Diesels and electronic ignition cars are next...

Thanks for all the feedback; I'll keep working on ideas for the Cummins.

Tackett

[quote author=Demon_Customs link=board=7;threadid=9795;start=0#93917 date=1043020781]

I'd like some info on the rods your building. Used to be a guy around here with a red flatbed Dodge and he had stacks that spit flames. I think he used alchohol as the excellerent.

DB
